A Virus C ROM and debian package emu with fine gui!

Post by glowrak guy »

https://www.dogsonacid.com/threads/who- ... 354/page-2

This works fine in AVLinux/Linux Reaper, has 8 banks of Virus C sounds and a real ROM, so a notebook
to track new favorite sounds will be lucky.

The above link shows the blog page link to the emu .deb download, which is found clicking the Downloads button on that blog page.

The ROM files are at the Synthesizer ROM Archive link, scroll down to the red-letter section,
I used the one named 'Access Virus C (am29f040b_6v6).zip'. !7th in the list, if I counted right

Put both the emu .so file and the ROM's .BIN file in your plugin path and rescan.

I first installed with sudo dpkg -i name-of .deb ...and found it in /usr/local/lib/vst (and vst3)
Copied them to .vst and .vst3

It's not a good idea to name any software product with the word "virus".

Try the Reaper demo, it's free for quite a long demo time, and runs unrestricted.
If it works there, you've eliminated some causes of a missing gui.
The install folder will take up about 120 meg of disk space.

64 and 32 bit Reaper versions at https://www.reaper.fm/download.php

as well as windows versions that run well in wine.

Cheers

If the GUI's so fine then I'd like to see a screenshot of it. I can't easily find one in any of the posted links here.

I tested it for a while, nice synth, ok features, nice presets (testing maybe 20). But then considering facts:

  • I have plenty of synths with presets I haven't tried, so argument 'this synth has plenty of great presets' is not remarkable
  • I have plenty of synths which are capable, but I haven't learned to use their capabilities properly, so picking one more synth to learn does not make sense
  • I have plenty of synths for which I have proper legal rights to use them, so picking one which is IPR violation (using ROM of Virus is ok if you own one physical device) sounds like flawed idea

So maybe I'll skip this candy :-)

Otherwise great, but for me at least it drops notes, fairly often too. Impossible to actually play anything. Maybe every 20th note is just dropped. I don't have this problem with any other synth plugin. :(

The new vst2 version 1.2.25 works beautifully in Renoise (the previous version lost its GUI when opening it a second or third time). And what a gorgeous sound!

The vst3 version has a weird issue with automation, where the automation only works when the GUI is visible, but maybe that's a Renoise quirk with vst3. In Carla, and in MusE, I still have no GUI.

In Carla 2.6.0.alpha-1, after enabling experimental features, and selecting "enable plugin bridges" and "run plugins in bridge mode when possible", I have a working GUI!
