The Fourth Offering: a miniature soundscape

Post by Impostor »

For my fourth offering I present a 100 second soundscape for your enjoyment!

https://devloop0.bandcamp.com/track/the-fourth-offering

Made in MusE, with The Black Pearl, Pianoteq, CrumarPerformer, and a couple of sfz instruments.
I won't promise I won't revise it.

Update: What did I tell ya? Shaved 12 seconds off. Not much left :) My tracks get better the more I cut away. What does that signify?

Newsflash: So, after listening almost non-stop for two days, I came up with only two minor tweaks: I made the xylophone (which has a very fast calf delay and a bit of reverb to spice it up) more audible, and I deleted an out-of-place ride hit at the very end.

I also took advantage of the situation to 'master' my other three tracks which I put into the "Autumn Shades EP". The volume of the individual tracks is made equivalent as much as I could. This "EP" will function as a collection bin of recent tracks so I'll be adding more in the future.

Hi @Impostor , you are very good at coming to a point. I get a nice, subtle mystery flavour from this piece. And perhaps anything else would only detract from that. Keep your miniatures coming!

Glad to hear that!

It'll be an interesting experiment to find out what the minimum length of a track must be to provide a satisfactory experience. 97 seconds is definitely the shortest finished piece I've ever made. And it's been 22 years since I made something exceeding 5 minutes :)

I like this more than the fourth, probably because it is a bit more mysterious and the harmonics and notes are more interesting!

Nice drumwork once again, maybe add some more lowend soundwise (not to the drums, to the synths)?

MusE DAW running on Debian 11 Testing/XFCE4.

I -did- rather crudely apply a low-shelf with the EQ to damp frequencies <60Hz on the master. The change wasn't too audible on my headphones, but maybe I damped a bit too enthusiastically...

Thanks for your feedback, it's appreciated.
