ports: timidity and fluidsynth

i use timidity, but used fluidsynth in the past. the former crashes rosegarden less frequently.
timidity shows up with 4 ports, but (if i recall correctly) fluidsynth offered only one.
is having more ports an advantage?
if so, what is the advantage?
if not, why does one have 4 ports and the other just one?
