Re: Best FM synth?
If you were reading what has been discussed, did you have some good options to add to list handled before?

Hybrid synths as Surge XT and Yoshimi/ZynAddSubFX, with FM capabilities, can compete in the mainstream league of commercial synths. With Surge, for example, you can have three FM operators, add an envelope to the modulator of the carrier with the LFOs, and modulate them with his own FM routing. In dual mode, the possibilities multiplies.

You did not add single new option, all them have been discussed before in this thread.hefxthoth wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 11:40 am Yes, of course. With Dexed you can have what you want: you can make a complex wave with two operators and modulate another operator with this oscillator if you choose the right algorithm. If Dexed sounds a bit raw cause of mono, you can add vitamins (FXs) and taste the alchemy.

DX7 emulation, only sine waves, ruled out by me on first post of this discussion.

Re: Best FM synth?
Finally had time to play (like kids play with toys) with my synths. On a trip with laptop, having spare time on evenings. F-em won't work, either it is segfaulting on start or showing empty window and FM8 can't be installed because changes in NI installer. So both paid options failed, were they linux native or not. Not paid options, that old freebie win32 synth DoubleSix mentioned in thread opening works, just like yoshimi and zyn.

Re: Best FM synth?
Got around with this:
- vst3 crashes, vst2 version starts
- latest version (1.1.6) is having empty window, older version works

Oh I remember that old DoubleSix from Odo, I suggested him the name DoubleSix on the old days at KVR forum, it was named after the french vocal band "Les double Six"

Oh yeah, DoubleSix is indeed great synth. With some small changes that would be real killer, but I assume maker is not active anymore, so that is the way it stays. I find biggest things to be missing osc tuning change by semitones and all timing constraints are by hand, not tied to bpm.

Re: Best FM synth?
I picked up F'em and Biotek from JRR shop for 25$ each last year. No way I would pay 200, 150 or 100... but 25 each... no hesitation.
the vst3's are not very stable, I tend to use the vst2's mostly

Yeah, got my F'em from same offer. Tried Biotek, but did not find so interesting that would pay even that amount.

Did someone try Aurora FM? There is no native Linux version but author claims that it works under Wine.

Re: Best FM synth?
FWIW Yoshimi's AddSynth engine has very expansive modulator capabilities. Including Morph, Ring, Phase, Frequency Pulse Width. Morph requires use of the Envelope controls to shift between the Voice osc. and the Mod. one. All the others can also use this, and you can have arbitrary envelopes. All 8 voices can have different setups and higher numbered ones can use lower ones as their mod. source!
