transferring licenses from iLok (with dongle activations)

Wondering if someone in a similar situation might know.

At the moment I don't have a Windows installation. I was able to install and open the iLok app through WINE, but installation of the dongle-driver failed. I have 26 activations on that dongle.

My questions are:

Would I still be able to transfer a license that has an activation on that dongle?

Or would I have to install the iLok app on Windows somewhere (e.g., in a VM) to make the dongle accessible for the transfer to proceed?

Why do you need iLok ? you do not need it for LMMS or wine.

Cant afford windows ?

Download an iso from microsoft and don't activate it.

You will have windows working fine, but with a watermark telling you its not activated.

EDIT: I'm setting up Windows 10 in a VM to run the iLok app. That way I can just deactivate all the licenses stored on the dongle, to prepare for possible sales and transfers.

EDIT2: Meanwhile I have successful deactivated all licenses from my iLok dongle, through Windows running in a VM.

In case someone else might find this useful.

I set up Windows 10 in VirtualBox. Something to know is that after Windows starts up, it will be sluggish because it is downloading its own updates in the background. After an update and restart, Windows will run faster. I would advise waiting until after that first update and reboot before installing any apps.

For virtualbox to detect and access the iLok dongle, I had to download and install Oracle's VirtualBox Extensions. I also had to add my username to the virtualbox group (in Linux), close VirtualBox, and log out of Linux then back in. After that, the iLok dongle was detected and usable by Windows (in VirtualBox).

EDIT3: iLok Support has told me that accessing an iLok dongle through WINE or even through Windows in a VM is not officially supported, and that they won't help if something goes wrong. Just FYI.

because of ilok and other nice dongles, systems get slow and unstable - making the systems really unusable for live realtime demonstrations.
though, in the mi industry, people are mostly having the license by hand...mostly NFR not for resale licenses....and then they are using cracked versions to demo their own stuff...
I have one friend who uses cracked versions of plugins he has paid for, just to avoid all the registration and other hassles.
