USB Speakers

Post by Chipfryer »

Ok I wanted to wrap up my windows work and with a great thread on here about getting monitors for mixing I was bought a pair. They are StudioDock USB Speakers.

Now then unknown to me I was told that I'd have hell connecting and using them on Linux is this true? They are a damned nightmare on Windows that's for certain. My DAW does not recognise them and as such I cannot use a Microphone since there is no analogue connection. (All about connections again I know). But there isn't a single article on these anywhere that I can find and the forum I asked about this has no reply. Good huh? :?

That is the one great thing about Linux. Everyone is just about 100% grounded and helpful towards a common cause.

Has anyone used USB monitor Speakers on Linux and did you run into any problems with them please?
Many thanks.

Perhaps 'lsusb' sheds some light on the 'real' (technical) name of the devices?

Found this:
usb_ids 17a0 'Samson Technologies Corp.'
usb_ids 17a0 0200 'StudioDock monitors (internal hub)'
usb_ids 17a0 0201 'StudioDock monitors (audio)'

What does aplay -l return with the StudioDock monitors attached?

Looks like it's these:

Code: Select all

17a0 Samson Technologies Corp.
	(...)
	0200 StudioDock monitors (internal hub)
	0201 StudioDock monitors (audio)
(from http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids )

It's being recognised properly it seems. And it has ALSA id 'hw:1' so in the QjackCtl settings window you could try setting 'hw:1' as the 'Output Device'.

You're welcome. I assumed you wanted to use them with JACK. You should be able to use them with PulseAudio too, so on a regular Ubuntu desktop installation. But I'm not a Pulse whizz. Well, who is on this board actually

Hi Auto.
Odd thing is that Mint shows them in Alsa under control panel. I was pretty surprised to be honest the were picked up like that at all.

Oh yes definitely because I'll need them for mastering. I know they are small and less technically capable compared to some high priced brands but I'm sure they will be better than my stereo unit for now.

Thanks Auto/Everyone.
