Well, what do you know.
I've SOLVED the screen capture problem. Problem was in the (of course) proprietary video drivers. Turned them off and screen capture now works.

Awesome! recordMyDesktop apparently has issues with the Ati closed source drivers. I use the open source radeon drivers, works well with recordMyDesktop.
