This is also something I am in the dark about. Good question.
Re: The Best of Effects For Creating Music On LInux
take a look at these guys:
http://www.linuxdsp.co.uk/ IIRC these come as pre-compiled binaries.
and then there is:
[urlhttp://www.ladspa.org/][/url]
the CAPS and TAP sets i'd recommend, but you have to compile them yourself. if i'm not mistaken you can get deb packages from the ubuntu repositories.
and:
https://launchpad.net/invada-studio ladspa and lv2 versions. compile yourself.
and also: http://plugin.org.uk/
I'd be surprised if you couldn't find packages for these - search for "swh-plugins"
Hope that helps!

Calf plugins (google for those, they are one of the best and you can easily find precompiled binaries)

Those are all plugin packs. And like Capoeira and Chipfryer I'm anxious to know which particular plugins other people use, also simply because those plugin packs contain like a gazillion different reverbs, compressors and EQ's.
And then there's jconvolver, anyone any experience with that one?

I use Calf Vintage Delay, Calf Reverb, Calf Multichorus, Calf Flanger.
Among eqs I actually found that eq with not so cool name is actually a very good equalizer: C* Eq2. It should be there with all the standard LADSPA plugins and I highly recommend it.
I really need vocoder, but I do not know how to use it, tbh. I mean the only LADSPA one which there is.

Re: The Best of Effects For Creating Music On LInux
Thanks for the update and links guys.
Another really stupid question. Using these apps is it possible to play with effects on in real time or are they added afterwards? Most vst plugins I've used before for example were 'after the effect' if you pardon the pun.
Thanks again.

Re: The Best of Effects For Creating Music On LInux
most jack compatible apps work in real time with the effects.
Re: The Best of Effects For Creating Music On LInux
Thanks Funk.
That will help a great deal Looking forward to getting all of this sorted out now.

Hi Chipfryer,
I suggest you try jack-rack and see and listen for yourself.
Jack-rack is a simple ladspa host. In qjackctl, connect the audio source (system_capture or the output of a jackified media player) to the input of jack-rack and the output of jack-rack to the system_playbacks and there you go with your tests.
HTH, Pablo

strange, i selected to subscribe but didn't recieved the replys.
only now i see the replys.
since i now have ardour with LV2-support (Thanks to Phillip5-ppa) i am testing the Calf-LV2s. I like the visualation, of the Compressor for example.....one thing i don't like: i can't type in the values with numbers from keyboard...in the compressor for example, with the knob i can only set the gain to 0; 0,4 ; 0,7 ; 1,1 ; 1,4 and so on - there seam to be no way to type in the values
