début: The Tribe
Hey guys!
After weeks of whining, then after a couple of months of learning I finally found more or less my workflow, my software and my preferences.
Let me humbly present to you my first serious and complete tune made entirely on Linux, with free software only.

I know this is not Oscar's, but I would like to thank everybody who gave me their advice. To me this small release is a completion of a difficult, but interesting time of change and at the same time the beginning of new times - times of music on GNU/Linux!

Thirded.
Just goes to prove that synths on Linux are every bit as good as those in the commercial world. I just need one bit of hardware to complete my journey into Linux music 100%. Nothing much, just a good dvd rom. Odd innit? anyway with that I can forego finding out what is stopping me from using the software properly and start writing again.
All is well.
Nice on Louigi, keep writing pal.

Thanks for the comments, guys!
I've used LMMS. In LMMS used several Zyn instances, loads of wav samples, some sf2 and Mallets for marimbas.

Re: début: The Tribe
Hello Louigi, my 2 cents, I like the general theme and also the arpeggio that kicks in around 3 min. Some sounds are a bit too cheesy for me though, but that's just personal taste. And the song has a certain depth to it because of the well chosen reverb/delay and the subtle mixing effects.
It's certainly one of the better tracks made with LMMS that I've heard. Do you happen to like bands such as Tortoise, The Mercury Program and Maserati?

Then I say you should notify the LMMS devs and convince them to post this piece on their front page. Like AutoStatic said, it's a lot better than most of what I've heard from their site. Frankly, it's a great demo for LMMS, a very persuasive example of what can be done with the program.Louigi Verona wrote:I've used LMMS.

Re: début: The Tribe
Thanks for the advice guys! Maybe I should do that as I'd love to promote LMMS a bit. If I can do this with my music - well, great!

Re: début: The Tribe
Those are postrock bands that make heavy use of vibes, arpeggios and delays (I sometimes like to refer to it as Delaycore
). And Fender Rhodes. I should mention The Album Leaf also, really nice ambient music with an electronic basis and a lot of nice acoustic instruments on top of that.

To mention my inspiration - that would be Saafi Brothers (trance/ambient/dub). A German act, they are very good.

Re: début: The Tribe
Made another video of LMMS, now on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niLD_bmVFEQ
This time I was very technical - used Kino and then Cinelerra. I find the latter to be really cool.

I quite liked that tune. The sounds were all well-chosen and it has a good atmosphere. If I had to compare it to anything, I would have said it sounded like some of Ian Boddy's stuff or even maybe even Tangerine Dream.

Re: début: The Tribe
Yep, people typically associate with Tangerine Dream. I guess it is the inclusion of the bassline ) Glad you liked it!
Re: début: The Tribe
I have never actually heard any Tangerine Dream (to the best of my knowledge, anyway), but to me there were parts that were reminiscent of some of Christopher Franke's Babylon 5 soundtracks.
