AVL-MX21: KDE?

Hi,
I've just bought a new computer, and want to take a chance to change my distro, which was a Kubuntu with KX Studio repos. I was really loving it, but since KX is no more a distro, I think it's time to change (I'll keep using Carla suite).
Does it make sense to install KDE on an original AVL?

Hi,
To be honest I don't see why it wouldn't work but KDE is not on my radar at all, I don't use it, I don't test it, I don't particularly like it which is why AVL-MXE comes with virtually no KDE libs installed (Kdenlive is included as a self-contained Appimage). I completely understand wanting a system that looks good and attractive but to me the Desktop Environment is just that incidental thing that gives me a menu, a systray and holds up the wallpaper. The main event is the Applications so I'm very puzzled that people just don't use specialty Distros as they come. Why not Dual boot with some big KDE Distro and have your KDE fun there and boot into AVL as-is (with your own customizing) and just use it as presented..?

I perfectly understand, and that's why XFCE
AND Gnome
AND KDE exist, and why we love GNU/Linux!!!
On my old computer I was already in dual boot, Mint Cinnamon for the common use, and KX Studio (thus with KDE) for the sound production. I was a bit wary at first, but I finally get used to it, it is powerful though.
I'll give a try to AVL these next weeks, it looks really great!
thank you!

I use KDE Plasma on plain Debian Bullseye and have a setup how-to in the HOW TOs, Tips & Tricks subforum. Some of it has changed eg. KX repo no longer maintains a lot of software and plugins it previously did. Much of the config is borrowed from AVL but obviously it's a lot more work than just installing AVL-MXE and it doesn't have the neat utilities AVL-MXE has which obviate some of the CLI stuff I often do.
If you're doing a new install, why not install AVL-MXE and then add the kde-plasma-desktop package which should enable selecting DE at login. Get back to us and report how it goes.

The current version of Ubuntu Studio (21.10) has KDE Plasma and the long term release next month should have it too (I'm guessing they didn't just change for one release). So that's also an option.

I'll try AVL-classic first, and then think if I really want to use KDE. If AVL works well for my needs I'll thing about it and report for sure!
Ubuntu Studio, never again. I was using it long time ago when I started to work with sound on my computer and the first version was released (~2007?). It was unstable: xruns and sound interface crashes. Then I tried a lot of distros like Musix, CCRMA, and finally KXStudio. When I reinstalled my computer about two years ago, I tried again UStudio to install KX repositories on it, but exactly the same problems. Then I used a simple Kubuntu+KX, which was working well.
I won't use all apps from KX repositories on AVL, but I really love Cadence suite!
I tell you in some times when I dig more...

Cadence, Carla, Claudia, all the C words are applications for which falktx is the developer, and also is KX maintainer. I found Cadence to be limited and wouldn't do what I needed so I use Qjackctl which is more configurable. Carla is great though and the only C-app I use from there now.
I think KX keeps a few plugins and applications updated (or maybe not?) but most are now not updated there eg. Ardour is still 5.12 whereas upstream is 6.9. It would be great if he'd split out actively updated to a separate repo, or unmaintained to a "legacy" repo.

My 2 cents. Might switch to KDE some day too. Gnome 3 is a nightmare to grasp. LXDE has one theme that does not give me a headache from its color scheme (BlueMenta) and it's so old that it ain't compatible with GTK3.
Anyway, I use Ubuntu LTS 20.04 with:
- Repository for Qtractor and Qjackctl: https://launchpad.net/~rncbc
- Repository for latest version of Ardour for Ubuntu 20.04 'Focal Fossa': https://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-ppa ... -backports
- Wine Staging so certain Windows VST's behave nicely:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main
- KXStudio for Carla stuff etc.: https://kx.studio/Repositories
- Deactivate certain KXStudio repo's because they're old, unneeded, conflict etc.: libs, plugins and music. Keep: apps and the one named "http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debia ... dio/ubuntu bionic main"
- Note that the KXStudio repo's for Ubuntu 20 Focal are the same as those for Ubuntu 18 Bionic!
Looks to me like @falkTX is slowly but surely phasing out KXStudio. I'm convinced he'll keep developing the Carla stuff though. We'll see what repository he'll use for that in the future.

About
Ardour:
Paul Davis and Ardour Team highly recommend to use official version downloaded on ardour.org:
Paul Davis
We do not (and cannot) support distribution provided versions of Ardour.
The official version is always at
https://ardour.org/download 21 and can be parallel installed with distribution provided versions.
And AFAIK Ardour is not anymore in KX repository.
Code: Select all

Of course, KX is not anymore a complete sound/video production repository. Impossible to find an app+lib list. It is not a PPA anymore.
If I browse the apps by source in
Muon, I notice there are only:
-Cadence Suite
-a lot of plugins, most of them FalkTX is involved in, like
Disthro
-libs, like Flac or firmwares
-
non-suite
-some small apps ant utilities (Jaaa...)
-system config files and KX themes and visuals
There is an additional edge repository with up-to-date version of Jackd and FFADO, where FalkTX is also involved.
check the last
news...
Well, I understand you prefer Qjackctl. Cadence is only another GUI for Jackd, so it basically controls the same functionalities and parameters. I use it mostly with
Claudia, which is a powerful session manager. Sound and music is my job and I use it daily. Despite some minor flaws, it does what I need.
Ok, now I have to go, I have my fresh AVL to configure!

If you install KX repos as per instructions at
https://kx.studio/Repositories you get:
Code: Select all
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kxstudio-debian-ppas.list
1: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debian/libs/ubuntu bionic main
2: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debian/music/ubuntu bionic main
3: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debian/plugins/ubuntu bionic main
4: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debian/apps/ubuntu bionic main
5: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debian/kxstudio/ubuntu bionic main
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kxstudio-external.list
1: deb [arch=amd64,i386] https://kx.studio/repo/ stable free
2: deb [arch=amd64,i386] https://kx.studio/repo/ gcc5 free
And an ancient version of Ardour is still there:
Code: Select all
apt list -a ardour
Listing... Done
ardour/gcc5 2:5.12.0-1kxstudio2v5 amd64
ardour/stable,now 1:6.5.0+ds0-1 amd64 [installed]
ardour/stable 1:5.12.0-1kxstudio2 amd64

ok, good to know!
I don't see it in Muon with the filters, so I thought it was removed...

It is of no use however, and I will soon remove that repo. As you see the version in Debian stable is 6.5 whereas the KX one is 5.12. KX versioning where it is prefixed by a high number causes it to be preferred by package managers even when a later version is available but has a lower prefix is baffling. I use Mixbus rather than Ardour anyway which is why I haven't tried to source the current v6.9.
I'm also in the process of rationalising the plethora of plugins I have installed so have replaced a few previously sourced from KX eg. Dragonfly Reverb and LSP, from upstream, and will just have less installed or use alternatives to those from KX and remove all KX repos except the Carla etc. ones which are actively maintained.
AVL-MXE has done the same and doesn't have KX active by default afaik.

Thank you raboof...
I'm trying AVL without KDE at the moment. It seems very stable with my hardware and for my use, except for some drivers issue with internal sound and both GPUs, which are very new.
I'll keep using it that way and figure out later if I try KDE.
thank you for your help!
