Heroine

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, Heroine breathes soundtrack, synth music and baroque:
https://youtu.be/rOKoHH8cuCM
In this composition the old Roland JV-1080 module deserves a special mention, for a truely powerful architecture, especially considering the original year of release having been 1994.
On the Linux side the special mention goes to Yoshimi for great plucks, nice additive synthesis and indispensible layering sounds. I also used even more of Barry's Satan Maximizer, thanks @GMaq .
The composition brings together a few ideas - or should I say passionate cravings. :) Technically, I experimented with careful fading and blending and there is still more to learn. Musically, there was one old piece I always wanted to work with in a soundtrack like setting. Even though its appearance in the end is quite short, I am satisfied with it and can now move on to pastures new. :)
Enjoy and best wishes, Jeanette

Nice piece`o`master, Jeanette. Like it. So melodic and melodious and leisurely, with a steady form, that seems quite rare for this forum filled with experimental.
However I didn’t feel the title. On my opinion the tune is not hard and glitch as heroine, rather mysterious and breathable as foggy forest with some dark thicket.
I also easily imagined an observer who walks around the city, past houses and buildings, tramples along the alleys, enters parks and squares and stares with interest on what seems so familiar and ordinary to us.
Enjoyed symph component at the end as well.
Sorry if I distracted you with such a nonsense.

Hi @andropogon , thanks for the kind words. It feels good to know that your music touches other people. You have quite the film in your head. I could imagine it as well.
But why not heroine then? She doesn't have to be glitchy, she can be stealthy or a heroine of perspective? So many ways to be heroic. :)
Thanks again! This is very much appreciated!

OHOHOH! It's my fault, so serious mistake. I've just mixed up two words - heroine and heroin. I'm so sorry for that misunderstood.
Now everything's in place - a heroine is walking around the city or probably in a foggy forest and seems that I can see through her eyes.
Nice work Jeanette! Now I like that melody many more.

Hi @andropogon , I almost thought that you might have mixed up the two. That pair is somewhat evil. :) Anyway, the other kind without the "e" I would have done much calmer, duller and with not as much development, I think. :) Though I have never tried it, far too risky insidious.

Me too. Hope will never try. But I like your imagination and theme development even if you really meant something else. :)

Btw. the theme I work towards at the end is the beginning of the c# minor fugue from Bach's well-tempered Clavier book II. I love that fugue, but unfortunately forgot how to play it. Well, I never could properly play it in the first place. Try as hard as I may, I just got by. :(

Believe me you put it right. No more no less. Great balance of classics with reaching the final.

A wonderful journey expressed through note-mastery, revealing deep musical knowledge. I enjoyed the listen, especially the warmth of the first FM-sounding synth.

Hi @ambicumber , many thanks for the sweet feedback.
The FM synth you hear in the beginning, the rhodes like sound that blends into the real rhodes is a simple patch created just for the purpose in Yoshimi, using simple 2-operator FM with two sines on the same pitch.
The chorused rhodes like tones layered a little later on with the rhodes - and throughout the piece, is Yoshimi again. I think the patch understudy from my latest jeanny's Genius soundbank.
The soft bell, mostly in the far in the background is - I'm afraid - a patch on the Roland JV-1080. Same goes for the pad, introduced in the first piano section.
Thanks again!

Wow!

Great mood, I love that hybrid Rhodes at the beginning and the touch of tremolo and how it slowly evolves and develops interest until the piano comes in. I also enjoyed how the mood transforms from melancholy to anticipation when the plucks and drums come in... Some nice drops there too! The synth soundscapes are really immersive!

The mixing and performing/assembling are really top-notch! I daresay this song is pretty close to perfect for what it is! Very inspiring work!

Thanks again everyone! I think I shall have to include the minimal synth Rhodes in the next set of Yoshimi patches.
The ebb and flow of atmosphere came as a surprise to me when I began recording. I realised that I couldn't raise the tension with that one - or one and a half - motif through the whole piece. So something happened that played more on the theme of seamless fading, blending and flowing.
The one thing that fell flat for me in this song were the drums. Even though I worked with some layering and parallel processing the result doesn't punch a lot.

IMHO the drums are fine in that case. Quite in style.
