[Solved] M-Audio 8x8 does not show up in alsa

lsusb shows the 8x8 is present.
Bus 001 Device 024: ID 0763:1031 M-Audio MidiSport 8x8/s Loader
aconnect -i/o however, does not show any inputs/outputs related to the 8x8.
I noticed that when I plug it into my rack USB hub, then the light comes on, but goes off again.
On the rack-hub the light stays on if a device has been recognised.
So it seems it is a driver problem.
What am I missing ??

You may need to install & load the firmware.
These instructions are probably dated and there'd be different and / or easier methods to get it working but it's a starting point.
https://alsa.opensrc.org/USBMidiDevices
If on an Ubuntu type OS it is already in the repos
apt-cache search midisport

In Debian it is midisport-firmware. I have no idea what "Ubuntu type" OSs call it, but probably the same.

Fantastic thanks. Installed midisport-firmware and now the USB hub rack light remains green for the 8x8 so it loaded firmware.
It also now give me all io.
aconnect -i
client 40: 'MidiSport 8x8' [type=kernel,card=6]
0 'MidiSport 8x8 MIDI 1'
1 'MidiSport 8x8 MIDI 2'
2 'MidiSport 8x8 MIDI 3'
3 'MidiSport 8x8 MIDI 4'
4 'MidiSport 8x8 MIDI 5'
5 'MidiSport 8x8 MIDI 6'
6 'MidiSport 8x8 MIDI 7'
7 'MidiSport 8x8 MIDI 8'
8 'MidiSport 8x8 Control'
Problem solved:

mspconf.sh is missing on the web, but i found a copy on webarchives for 2006.
What kind of configurations can be done on the 8x8 with this shell script ?

The plain script is KING and solves my problem as posted, but I am also interested in simplesysexxer as it has canned scripts for other Keyboards etc that is crucial to me.
After a lot of searching, it seems the original sysexer is superceded by simplesysexxer.
I compiled the source ( SimpleSysexxer-0.3-bin.tar.gz ) using the BUILD instructions but get,
# qmake SimpleSysexxer.pro
/home/testuser/Downloads/SimpleSysexxer/temp/SimpleSysexxer-0.3/SimpleSysexxer.pro:3: Assignment needs exactly one word on the left hand side.
Error processing project file: SimpleSysexxer.pro
Seems to me the sources are way to old.
Anyone know of an alternative source or even a deb for simplesysexxer ?
I went through everything I could find on the web to resolve this and there is not much.
For more that a decade I developed a severe dislike towards QT or trolltech. Is always an issue.
The stupid qt compiler does not even give you a line number for the error.

Ok homey, here's a URL where you can download simple-sysexxer binary and copy to your system and run, if it breaks anything hard luck, you know the drill. You will need qt5 installed for it to run. It was compiled on Focal / Mint 20.
It's untested and unknown whether or not it works properly.
Alternatively, and additionally, here is a deb package for sysexxer.
Use at your own risk.

Let me know if it works and if it does vodka bill is for you. First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin.

Thanks a lot.
At least I get the interface so it works functionally.
There was no deb package, just a binary, which did launch the interface.
I will go look again if I missed the deb. Ok found the deb thanks.
I will just have to go read up how it works as it has no preconfigured profiles for the 8 or so keyboards it can control.
I will let you know if it worked on my 8x8 or mashed it up.
The deb installed and I only had to install
libfltk1.3*
to get it working.
Have to go read up how to use it properly.
Thanks

So far so good.
If you can find more info & documentation then please post it here. Or if you have written your own procedures, templates and instructions for it, please post here.

I sure will do as you helped me a hell of a lot. thanks
I will likely end up writing my own application for the XT and I also have to write something for the Motu XT.
The window$ crap os and archaic software for these devices is just too much of a headache to continue with.
I have to port these asap to Linux.
The linux script at least is the most useful, although it seems it misses a bit of functionality.
It e.g. doesnt have a default no-connection option, which I am positive must exist among others.
