Hey hey, Old as the stone is an early 80s/late 70s synth song/soundtrack. A more lyrical John Carpenter perhaps:

On the Linux side I used LinuxSampler with the Salamander drumkit, Midish and Nama with the usual LADSPA effects. On the hardware side I only used monophonic analogue synths, which was a bit of a stretch for the brass, having to record six tracks. But the result is pleasant to my ears and quite what I was going for. Synths used: Arturia MiniBrute 2S, Behringer Neutron and Make Noise 0-Coast. Mostly sounds easy to recreate with any virtual analogue synth out there, if anyone is wondering. Only the 0-coast sound might need a wavefolder which is not the most common of features.

I really like how the synth voices interact with each other, also, the sounds are very nice.

It is cool that you integrate both hardware and softsynths, I'd like to do that someday. I have some similar equipment: A Microbrute and a Behringer Neutron and a Behringer Model D, but use them only for more experiemental noise music. What do you think the use of hardware brings to your songmaking?

To my ears this sounds very 70s, the stuff at around 3 minutes also a bit like some japanese instrumental electronic pop from the beginning of the 80s. Yeah, I like the tune too!

Thanks @oscillator ! As much as I like to associate music with genres, I often abysmally fail with my own. Even knowing all the music that I listened to, it's interesting what the perception of it is without a context of particular influences.
Leaving aside the aspect of hard- and software synths, I do enjoy the combination of blatantly synthetic and acoustic sounds, with a particular passion for acoustic drums in the mix, even when they are as tame as they were here.

Very cool chord progressions and sounds! I agree it sounds very 70s, almost like an overture to a musical of the time: it reminded me a bit of Jeff Wayne's "War of the worlds" for instance, in the way it opens and seems to introduce different themes that may come back in an hour or so

Listened to the dropbox link you posted on LAU. As usual, it's very well done... but not something I'm personally keen on.

Really cool synth sounds, and I like the arepeggiating thing you have going on in the background for most of the song.

I relate to this too much! And if the song were written by somebody else, I'd probably be able to figure out what genre or sub-genre it's in. Weird of how that works.

There seems to be a bit of story-telling going on in the song.
It's far easier to record sounds just for the sake of recording sounds, whatever the motive,
but it's more interesting to follow a storyline. It also doesn't sound like it would
fit in cheesy American video productions. Has a Northern European feel,
opinion based solely on the better of the netflix films I've watched coming from there,
rather than a hollywood set and canned 3d renders (shudders )

I use Nama, a commandline DAW based on Ecasound. It has a shell like interface, just like my MIDI sequencer Midish. Nama is linear and not (yet) tempo based. Midish too is rather linear, but has good options for copying and a scripting language which allows to wrtie some more "convenience commands".

You wouldn't have. It took me some time to find them or for them to find me. They are sort of "special interest". Midish was designed with a good engine -> UI separation and further developers in mind, but all Midish users just stick with the original "example shell" program. A blessing and curse of the Linux enviroment is that there is a lot of choice. It can make finding things hard, but does mean that - most likely - there is an environment for almost any workflow or taste.
I'm grateful that these particular choices exist and are still expanded. Considering my first recording environment on Linux, things havfe come a very long way and my current pool of applications is rich in features and comfort.

Impressive. I'd not heard of Nama, and the composition is quite elaborate to imagine creating without a GUI.
