Thanks to a generous donation from a viewer and supportr of my work, I have an opportunity to obtain and test various entry-level audio interfaces to demonstrate and help newcomers to Linux audio choose hardware and also give them confidence that they gear will work flawlessly.
I've created a survey to gather infrmation on what the Linux Audio community would like to see tested most, so I can get the most out of the budget available to me.

If that price is ok, then pull in Behringer UMC1820

Sure not entry-level on number of inputs, but with price, pretty near.

Behringer fully supports Linux so their devices work perfectly and they release Linux native apps for their mixers. There isn't much need to focus on these.

Where can I find these Linux native apps?

In their Homepage. They use JUCE as their toolkit, so easy to compile for all platforms. They even provide versions for x86 Linux and the raspberry pi.

IMHO, that makes it one that should be tested. Support vendors that support Linux.

I just meant that it's well known that their devices will work. There are many others that probably will work but until someone purchases one and plugs it in it can't be confirmed.

I agree support vendors that openly support Linux. Luckily Behringer are also excellent value and their midas inspired preamps are much better quality than their previous designs.

Any USB sound dongle. I bought one today (Orico) and when plugged in, it takes over the system. No more menu, right clicks...

I'm pretty sure these cheap dongles are no better than the built-in audio and probably worse.

So there is a thread in https://www.head-fi.org/threads/usb-c-t ... st.908839/ Head Fi about cheap dongles. I ended up with the JCALLY JM20 High Performance CS43131 DAC. I do have a custom .asoundrc but that's because I don't use dmix. However, I've had nothing like what you are describing.

They are usb class compliant usually so should work straight away. Sound pretty good. Much better than a normal laptop sound card. I think some have mic inputs if you have a headset as well. Pretty good for the price. The cheap ones are about $US20 or less.

Having sold my big head and amp I now plug into a Boss-Me-80 and plug that into the soundcard, OR plug into my mustang amp while listening to jamming tracks on the 65" TV and AvAmp. So I don't use any separate audio interface as such but HAVE had to get me a sound-card with 1/4" jacks only because the garbage-level 1/8" jacks on motherboards are so flimsy that IMO they need to be COMPLETELY redesigned. I could never call these jacks anything other than Design-Crimes! There's no point in me hollering at the industry but maybe a polling review like yours would have more ears on it. As far as can figure out the current situation, this problem is going to get worse as mobo makers move to surface-mounted everything so not only would the mini jacks need to be redesigned with multiple springs to assure uninterrupted contact no matter what, it may also be necessary to connect the mobo facility with a pigtail to the computer or laptop frame hosting a jack that can take unlimited insertions and all maner of abuse. My 2 cents.
