Most people who have a grudge against music theory don't bother with it and play by ear.

At a minimum I need to have a solid overview concept of what fits where. The learning aids I make for myself, and their development no less, give me that much. There's no better way of learning something than trying to teach it, sounds preposterous from a student but universally true nonetheless.merlyn wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 11:58 am Music theory is definitely not like a nuclear reactor. I have a trumpet playing friend who says "We're not air traffic controllers. Nobody dies if we hit a wrong note."
You're not going to be able to memorise everything all at once. It has to be done one piece at a time. You could take one key per week starting with the keys with less accidentals.
Can we agree that if a person was traveling from Los Angeles to New York, going via Venezuela is not a shortcut? How much time have you spent on shortcuts and cheat sheets, and how much time have you spent getting closer to your destination?
Do you?
I do. There are bottom-up people (a.k.a. analytic minded) who can
That's good because if they knew at the outset that numbersWhen students learn arithmetic they don't start with an overview.
so called hands-on time is important also but to me blind faith is a non-starterThe minimum is zero. You don't need any theory. Learn some open chords, use a capo and figure out songs by ear.
What you're teaching and therefore what you're learning here is a nether world of pre-music where chord symbols are typographical diarrhea.
Why concentrate on the chord *file-names* I cooked up to prevent
I'm actually deploying no end of desperate effort to unlearn the open chords that I had first learned for lack of knowing any better and because of an institutionalizedly inept instruction and communications system that no one had bothered to turn on its head. If my teachers had then had the half of a brain required to teach me to put the little finger on the 5th string C, the ring finger on the 4th string E and the middle finger on the 2nd string C then today I would be well on my way to sliding that one as well to wherever I want to
Look mate, moaning about it does nobody any good. There is nothing wrong with music theory or chord symbols, this is PEBCAK.
For the nTH time, I set out to preclude duplicate file names and legal characters without which I could NOT store my diagrams. I don't care what other people use, like, or dislike, and theory isn't addressed at all. No like no use, end of story.
