I have nothing against theory, approach most things like nuclear
reactors: gotta know everything by heart before you get within half
a mile of one.

Music theory is definitely not like a nuclear reactor. I have a trumpet playing friend who says "We're not air traffic controllers. Nobody dies if we hit a wrong note."
You're not going to be able to memorise everything all at once. It has to be done one piece at a time. You could take one key per week starting with the keys with less accidentals.
Can we agree that if a person was traveling from Los Angeles to New York, going via Venezuela is not a shortcut? How much time have you spent on shortcuts and cheat sheets, and how much time have you spent getting closer to your destination?

A crap. I meant an augmented(?) 3rd!
Ftr I never learned the English words in music theory, so I'm kinda guessing the words here.

Re: RFC: Chords, guitar diagrams, and digital file-names.
At a minimum I need to have a solid overview concept of what fits where. The learning aids I make for myself, and their development no less, give me that much. There's no better way of learning something than trying to teach it, sounds preposterous from a student but universally true nonetheless.merlyn wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 11:58 am Music theory is definitely not like a nuclear reactor. Re: RFC: Chords, guitar diagrams, and digital file-names.
Do you?
When students learn arithmetic they don't start with an overview. They start by learning to add. Then subtract, then multiply, then divide. Then they might get an overview, but I doubt many people actually have an overview of numbers, and simply know how to add, subtract ...
The minimum is zero. You don't need any theory. Learn some open chords, use a capo and figure out songs by ear.

Re: RFC: Chords, guitar diagrams, and digital file-names.
I do. There are bottom-up people (a.k.a. analytic minded) who can
cram the composition of a thousand different bricks without knowing
what they are for, and top-down types who need to first understand
the structure where it all fits in order to be interested at all.
That's good because if they knew at the outset that numbersWhen students learn arithmetic they don't start with an overview.
exist only in the mind of man they could never be motivated to
trade the activity for baseball in the school-yard
so called hands-on time is important also but to me blind faith is a non-starterThe minimum is zero. You don't need any theory. Learn some open chords, use a capo and figure out songs by ear.
I gotta tell the story of my first two parachute jumps here, the other thousand
had other lessons to teach. You're supposed to leap into the void when your
instructor taps you on the shoulder, having heard stories about chickens I
was set to do anything except hesitate. But the instructor was compensating
for ab-initio chickenitis in his calculations the net result of the two was that
I missed the field by a mile. "Now there's a natural" he thought so the second
time he tapped my shoulder just at the right moment but by then I knew the
feeling of falling and hesitated a bit and missed the field again by let's say a
good km.
I prefer to know what I'm in for......
As for that 'by ear' bit it's something to approach in due time too, not very good at
it thus far.

What you're teaching and therefore what you're learning here is a nether world of pre-music where chord symbols are typographical diarrhea.

Re: RFC: Chords, guitar diagrams, and digital file-names.
Why concentrate on the chord *file-names* I cooked up to prevent
illegal duplicates, and which do the job well enough thank you.
What is verbal diarrhea rather is the use on one language in
chord names as if music were anglophone: Add, Sus, Dim & Aug
to cite examples. I wonder what Dim means in Mandarin or in a
Youpic tongue? Shouldn't these all be lingo independant? While
on symbols the plus sign of Add-ition never meant Aug-mentation
to anyone outside of padded white rooms with locked doors
My DIY learning aid is beyond the few chord-name extras,
the entire set being really a holistic and very effective ensemble
working the chord diagrams, the names, the fretboard, the staff
notation and most importantly the sounds and emotions into my
neanderthal brain stem.
Here BTW is a bit from the classics just to spiffy up your day a touch

That's insightful. I suggest binning it sooner rather than later.

Re: RFC: Chords, guitar diagrams, and digital file-names.
I'm actually deploying no end of desperate effort to unlearn the open chords that I had first learned for lack of knowing any better and because of an institutionalizedly inept instruction and communications system that no one had bothered to turn on its head. If my teachers had then had the half of a brain required to teach me to put the little finger on the 5th string C, the ring finger on the 4th string E and the middle finger on the 2nd string C then today I would be well on my way to sliding that one as well to wherever I want to

Look mate, moaning about it does nobody any good. There is nothing wrong with music theory or chord symbols, this is PEBCAK.
If you were trying to come up with an alternative presentation of music theory, as the kids say ...
Epic fail.

Re: RFC: Chords, guitar diagrams, and digital file-names.
For the nTH time, I set out to preclude duplicate file names and legal characters without which I could NOT store my diagrams. I don't care what other people use, like, or dislike, and theory isn't addressed at all. No like no use, end of story.
