Debian: backports/repositories

Do you know any backports or repositories for Debian where elementary programs like jackd2 are available in the latest version?
I only know the backport
https://salsa.debian.org/multimedia-team/jackd2 which provides an old version and the repositories
https://kx.studio/Repositories:Extras which is only for Ubuntu.
Looking at
https://packages.debian.org/search?keyw ... ection=all I have the fear that jackd2
https://jackaudio.org/news/2021/07/16/j ... lease.html could take another 4 - 6 years until this version is released.

There are - for me - important new developments incorporated with what I do not want to wait so long.
What options are there for Debian?

Kxstudio isn't only for Ubuntu.
The KXStudio repositories support all Debian versions since 10 (Buster) and Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic) or above including Ubuntu 20.04.
They should work on all Debian-based distributions and variants.

That's true but I'm not sure what the status of JACK2 in particular is there either..? falkTX has really cut back on Packaging everything except Carla and a handful of Plugins

Yes I also use this and is great, thanks to falkTX!
But there is no jackd2 with it, that is only in the "KXStudio : Repositories : Extras" and this is according to HP "This repository is only for Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 users!".
Or does this also work with a Debian?

Oh sorry khz, I didn't notice that. I assumed it meant for everything.

It does seem that way unfortunately. It makes it problematic because there are updates that I want, like Surge adding code from the Eurorack modules, who provide their own debs but it means problems in package management (admittedly only holding the kxstudio version but more than I want to have to do ideally). I've never been keen on debian and I'm starting to think arch might be best, at least then you can get the updates when you want. Apart from your work, it seems that linux audio is in a weird place at the moment.

Yes if e.g jackd2 would be included in the general KXStudio repositories it would be great. But unfortunately it is not.
(Gentoo is the best for audio because of: make.conf >> https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki//etc/portage/make.conf, USE_flag >> https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/USE_flag and Portage & Overlays >> https://gpo.zugaina.org/Overlays IMHO. But, among other things, not as easy/fast to keep it stable without extensive technical knowledge as Debian.)

Well... hmmm
If you don't like Debian then what I do is not of much use to you... I know nothing of Arch and I'm not a bleeding edge type and I also have all I can handle (and pack into my aging brain) with Debian. But you are absolutely correct that there is an expanding black hole in Deb/buntu where KXStudio used to be.. To be clear I COMPLETELY agree that if falkTX is seeing no monetary incentive to continue maintaining his repos in their former glory then why would he waste his precious time, I'm sure the MOD products keep him plenty busy.. I am in no way bemoaning the fact that falkTX has taken a step back. But there are some hopeful signs on the horizon that may benefit some folks anyway..
1. Since I've moved AVL to MX the MX Packagers have started packaging some of the things falkTX has let go.. Q-Stuff, Yoshimi, Guitarix and a few others, they are not jumping at every incremental update but for people who use MX or AVL-MXE the MX Packagers are very responsive to respectful package requests so this is one potential avenue for some people anyway..
2. I have yet to make a move on this as I have been busy offline of late but
@Kott our fellow member here who is a tireless packager for the OpenSUSE GeekOS DAW repository has VERY VERY VERY generously offered to use the OpenSUSE Build Service to additionally build some of the Audio Plugins and stuff from their OpenSUSE Repos for a Debian Bullseye based repository with AVL-MXE in mind but I would think that any Debian Bullseye system would be compatible.. I will let Kott reply and verify this.. I am working on a Debian Bullseye AVL-MXE Release but it is at least a month or more off.. Now indeed these aren't direct fixes for Ubuntu users and I don't know what I can do about that but I'm just pointing out what I do know about potential future replacements for some folks who have relied on the KX Repos.
3. Lastly sysrqer I know you're a bleeding edge KDE guy, just so you know there are Repositories with much more current KDE versions for Bullseye in case your lack of enthusiasm for Debian is largely informed by their predilection to use pretty 'old' KDE versions in Debian Stable releases..

yes, me also interested in spreading good apps/plugins for Linux
there are some packaged already
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show ... _it:debian , if someone like to test them or has suggestions - welcome

Thank you @Kott! Do you plan in the future also base audio programs like e.g. jackd2 include there?

I haven't plan that. Main goal was to provide JUCE plugins which haven't Linux binaries.
Providing system apps like jackd is out of my scope and "responsibility" because I don't use Debian everyday.

Just point you repos to sid and enjoy your bleeding edge Debian.
Debian sid/unstable jackd2
1.9.19~dfsg-1 (
https://packages.debian.org/source/sid/jackd2)
Arch jackd2
1.9.19-2 (
https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/jack2/)

Current jackd2 version I have installed from Debian Bullseye repo:
Code: Select all
apt list -i jackd2
Listing... Done
jackd2/stable,now 1.9.17~dfsg-1 amd64 [installed]
When Debian adds a "~dfsg-x" to a package version it usually means the maintainer has added a patch to the upstream package of the same version number.
Also for Q-Stuff I have the rncbc PPA repo active so always have the latest versions of QJackctl, Qtractor etc. I'm using the "focal" PPA in Bullseye and have had zero issues. Yeah I know many will advise not to use PPAs in vanilla Debian but I have been assured these are compatible and it has proven to be so.
KX Studio repos are also a PPA but have also proven to be reliable for years.
It's a shame falktx has pulled back from maintaining some of the KX packages but I totally understand it would be hard to keep up his old pace considering the limited reward. Better to concentrate on the most important (which for me is Carla). I have too many plugins anyway so may go through the ones I have installed and check versions and either delete or find another source for the forgotten ones. I just had a quick look and many plugins in KX repo were updated 6 months ago but others over 2 years. For instance Dragonfly reverb in KX is 3.0.0-1kxstudio whereas it is 3.2.5 in Github currently.
Remember kiddies, SNS syndrome is a real thing (Shiny New Stuff) but the latest packages are not always an improvement on the previous ones and can be a pain. System upgrades almost every day is usually fine, until it breaks something. I ran Unstable on my desktop for over 12 years and it was fun and exciting but for production I settled back on Stable and am happy.
