How to install latest patchage in Ubuntu - instructions

Patchage is a great tool, but the version from repositories in Ubuntu is very old (0.2.3 when it should be 0.4)
It is not trivial to understand how to build the latest version, since if you just go to the author's site and try to build the latest version, you might get loads of problems with the dependencies and if you try to build things like 'raul' and 'flowcanvas' from their latest tars, you might not be able to build them.

But it can be done if you know how. This is what this instruction is for. Do not fear - installation will take not more than 5 minutes (depending on your Internet connection).

There are 3 steps.
I. Build raul.
II. Build flowcanvas.
III. Build latest patchage.



First off, go to terminal and type:
cd ~ (where ~ is tilda, this forum's font does not seem to display it correctly)
svn co http://svn.drobilla.net/lad/trunk drobilla-lad

This will give you an svn version of the app. It will put the 'drobilla-lad' folder into your home page. Travel there with the Terminal and go to raul folder. Let's build it.
Run
1) ./waf configure
2) ./waf
3) sudo ./waf install

If any problems arise during first step, just see what it says and install missing packages from synaptic, but chances are nothing will be needed.


Then go to the folder flowcanvas and do the same:
1) ./waf configure
2) ./waf
3) sudo ./waf install

Now that you are done, download Patchage 0.4.2 from http://drobilla.net/software/patchage/

Unpack, cd to the folder and just do the usual
1) ./configure
2) make
3) sudo make install

Again, if it asks for some stuff like libboost or whatever, just go to synaptic and install those libraries - my machine is an ordinary ubuntu machine with no special software installed and it found everything and built just fine.

Newer Patchage is certainly worth it. It is a great piece of software.

I agree!
patchage doesn't deserve this. The ubuntu version doesn't make a real difference with the old good qjackctl connection window. On the contrary, the current patchage is very nice. Making the connections between the jack ports (audio, jackmidi and alsamidi) is much quicker and even funny. For me is a must-have.
