I do enjoy a bit of Jazz from time to time, but much prefer live gigs (if I can get to them). My fondest memories are of monthly sessions in the late 1960s at a pub. I moved from the area in the 70s and haven't been back since

P.S. Can anybody tell me how to get an open source synth to sound like the solo that starts around 5:30? I imagine somebody more familiar with ZynAddSubFX or Yoshimi could probably do it.

Sounds like a bit like a Hammond B3, with a fairly short decay (or played staccato) , and a lot of reverb, possibly a touch of echo too. Yoshimi Will Godfrey Companion B3 might get close if tweaked a bit - Don't know if the other lot kept up with these.

Love Snarky Puppy! Sounds like a processed electric organ more than a synth. Read up on organ synthesis or modify existing presets, pretty sure you can achieve something similar on Zyn/Yoshimi and some delay and eq'ing and... reverb, of course

At this time, I am deep into jazz. And going backwards much more than before. In my 2O's and 30' I listened a lot modern jazz, free jazz, and so on. Now I'm interested in the history of all that : New Orleans, Swing era, and so on. All before bop. So much beautiful music.
It's not that I don't like contemporary jazz, but I'm widening my horizons.

There are a few ragtime tunes with 'bordello' in the title, so I think we can agree on jazz's provenance. 'Died in an institution', though, what did he mean by that? First of all this means Miles Davis thought jazz had died in his lifetime. His albums like Bitches Brew are not jazz by some definitions -- they're fusion. The institutions in question are Berklee School of Music and similar. When it's possible to get a degree in jazz it's dead in Miles Davis' estimation. And the Berklee system produces many competent players who have mastered the Berklee chord/scale system, but they don't sound like Charlie Parker.

I thought about this while watching a Joni Mitchell concert from 1979. Her band has Michael Brecker and Jaco Pastorius -- two of the top flight, heavy weight jazz musicians of the time. And Pat Metheny.

1979 was the crossroads, then. It's a good concert with jazz elements and this could have been how jazz musicians got to be heard by a wider audience, by hooking up with more popular musicians. That didn't happen and I think it's because record companies don't know what to do with music. They can market rap or rock or AOR or whatever bullshit journalists have come up with this week, but music is more difficult for them to market, when the 'product' stands or falls on whether it sounds good, not on the image and marketing.

In the 80s jazz went neo-classical with Wynton Marsalis which meant the musicians wore suits and played the old tunes. A strong image going back to when jazz was still alive in Miles Davis' estimation.

Now jazz has a tiny audience, most of who are musicians themselves. In this sense jazz has failed because it can't connect with an audience. In Duke Ellington's time jazz was the popular music.

I like most jazz including what's happening now like Kurt Rosenwinkle, Kenny Garret and music with a jazz influence like Louis Cole and Jacob Collier.

I didn't really believe this when my coworker showed it to me. I'm still not sure I believe it.
