minimum hardware required to plug a bass guitar to the PC
Hi,
I'm going to buy a bass guitar to play at home. Since I'd like to avoid buying those expensive bass guitar amplifiers I'd like to plug it directly to my usb sound card audio input.
I guess that I must put something between the bass out and the sound card audio in, and I wanted to know what is the minimum hardware possible that fits in that gap. Is that a 'bass preamplifier' ? if so.. what do you think about this one ?
Thanks,
Gerard.

Hi, Yeri. That looks like it would do the business. I've not used one of these, but a quick google found a few favourable reviews.
I'm saving up for one of these: http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/sansa ... verdi.html
A bit more expensive at 200 euro ( but that includes 15% uk sales tax), but generally considered to the one to have.

Hi Gerard,
what do you think about this cheap interface? This one is class compliant, no extra driver needed. You can route your raw signal through rakarrack or guitarrix. A possible drawback is that you don't have a second channel for mic or another instrument because this kind of simple interface typically routes the sound to both stereo channels.
Ciao Martin

Re: minimum hardware required to plug a bass guitar to the PC
many thanks for the income guys
the audio-to-usb cable fits better to what I am looking for. It is cheap and it's not needed an audio-in interface (useful if I want to play with the laptop). My idea is to let all the signal processing to the computer in order to lower the price. Probably in the future I'll consider other options but for the moment that's a good starting point.
By the way, I guess that this hardware is recognised as an audio input when it is plugged in, isn't it ? (similar to the two audio-in channels of my usb sound card when I plug it in).
Cheers,
Gerard.

Hi Yeri.
I don't know whether adding a bass cable to a USB outlet will help you at all frankly.
You'll need some sort of preamp. There are some cheaper ones on MusiciansFriend. I'll see if I can find the link my buddy posted. I think they were about $26 USD and also they have Mic imputs.
(Perhaps someone else will shout out a hand of help too).

Re: minimum hardware required to plug a bass guitar to the PC
Hi!
I've finally bought a behringer gitar link ucg102 http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/EUR/Comp ... 006493-000 and it works nicely
The only thing is that it only supports 16-bit samples so I have to put everything in 16 bits.
I plug it, see what id is assigned in /proc/asound/cards, configure in jack as the capture device and that's it.
I can hear what I play by just sending the sys input -> sys output, or record or whatever.. not needed any specific bass preamp nor amp...
I didn't remember to give my impressions about the device.. thanks for the remainder
See you,
Gerard.

you can get a fix id:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Multi ... dioDevices
Ciao Martin
Re: minimum hardware required to plug a bass guitar to the PC
or you could use the card name (given by ALSA) and never care about the id.

Re: minimum hardware required to plug a bass guitar to the PC
Good tip, thanks!.. I'll try it as soon as I can.
BTW.. does anyone know if it is possible to get a fixed usb bus for a particular device ?.. similar to the card id above but with the usb number instead (e.g. usb4). That's because the system assigns a device to a more or less arbitrary usb bus when it is plugged. Since there are some usb busses that are sharing IRQ with other devices, this sometimes results on having to unplug/re-plug the device several times until it's finally assigned to an usb bus with a non (or less) shared IRQ.

Yeri I just hooked mine up. (Peamp). Works very well for the money. No power switch which is a dog but if you hook things up on one power grid they cn all be turned off at the same time. (My mixer has no power switch either).
I don't know on the other question, sorry. I could look and find out however.

Good to know.. I'll have it into account when I want to plug a microphone, since it doesn't seem to be mic-to-usb cables (as in the guitar/bass case).Chipfryer wrote:Yeri I just hooked mine up.
