Hi, everbody, here's a couple of new tunes.
The first is a quickie that started as a test-drive of the rather excellent Renoise:
http://www.garryo.org/music/tea-and-biscuits.ogg
The second is guitar jazz-rock:
http://www.garryo.org/music/ladder-against-the-sky.ogg
Software used: Hydrogen, Ardour, Qsynth, Audacity, Jamin and various LADSPA plugins.
Versions in the inferior mp3 format and other stuff can be found at:

Your comments and criticism would be most welcome.
All the best, G.

Excellent!
What time signature have you used in the first one ? 5/8 ... ?
The second one reminds me of weather report.. did you program yourself the drums ? I find them great!.. I sometimes find songs that are very descompensated, with melodic parts (guitar, synth, ...) very ellaborated as opposite to drum parts almost inexpressive (specially in songs where the drums are programmed).. but that's definitely not your case.
Congratulations,
Gerard.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! Happiness = appreciative listeners > 0
Gerard, the first tune is in 17/8 !
I started with a konnakol pattern ( a way of speaking rhythms from Southern India ):
takita taka takita taka takita taka taka
so its 3x5 +2 = 17
Weather Report? Cool! I would say I was more inspired by Mahavishnu Orchestra though.
The drums were programmed in Hydrogen. I have been guilty of "robot drums" myself so I worked very hard on getting these to sound good. I'm glad you like them!
all the best, Garry.

Loved "Tea & Biscuits", that's neat work. Have you considered sending it to the Renoise guys ?
I wanted a little more out of the guitar on "Ladder". I like its melodicism, but the persistent long note values want some relief, maybe some ornamentation or other kind of push to the energy of the line. Good line too.
Excellent production. The overall sound here is sweet, nice balances throughout. You have the touch.
Sorry for the terse review, I'm on the go tonight. Thanks for tunes !
Best,

Thanks for your positive comments, Dave!
I did think about entering "Tea & Biscuits" into Renoise's current competition but unfortunately it doesn't meet their entry criteria ( it uses just a little bit too much CPU ).
But that's a good idea to send it; I'll look into it.
[ EDIT: done! Uploaded to Renoise.com]
That's fair comment about "Ladder". The lead is improvised ( albeit fairly well practiced ) and I think erred a little far on the side caution trying to get an error-free take. ( I am a relative newbie to 6 string playing. ) Listening to it again I can see that you're right.

You just made my day!

Hi G,

One of my regular tricks with Ardour: I record rambling error-filled leads, then I perform major surgery and recompose a final lead from snippets of my ramblings. The end result often sounds exactly like an improvised solo, when in fact it's been (sort of) meticulously composed. Ardour's Split and fade functions are my friends. Ditto for the Region resizing, very nice for quickly and easily isolating passages or even individual beats.
Gotta love Ardour.

That's a good tip: I'll try that.
Gotta love Ardour.
