mp3's playing back at light speed on 2496

Post by JPL »

Hi all,
this is my first time posting here. I just got a m-audio 2496 pci sound card and am right in the middle of setting up a DAW based on Gentoo/Gnome/Ardour/Jack and all these great, free apps for creating and recording music. It's a fairly steep learning curve, as with all things Linux, but it's coming together slowly. I'm a singer/songwriter of sorts and only need two ins at any one time, so my setup uses two TubeMP mic pre-amps, a Shure Sm58 and an Apex Condenser Mic into the 2496 and i have a pair of entry level Fostex powered monitors for mixing. I mainly play guitar, and I have a couple elecs and acoustics to work with as well as a midi keyboard for auxiliary instrument sounds. I plan on eventually buying the FMR RNP & RNC, as well as a better condenser mic, but for now the tubeMP's will have to do.

Anyway, that's my setup - but here's my question: mp3 playback is super sped up(i.e a three min. song is done in 12 secs. kinda fast). I've come across envy24control and fiddling with the clock settings for the card affects the speed of playback so I guess these two things are related. The problem is at the lowest clock setting(int 22050) it's still way, way too fast. Has anyone experienced this? Hopefully someone knows of a solution or is it possible that this type of soundcard is not designed for general use such as mp3 listening etc. but only specifically for sound input/output type functionality.

Weird. I have this same audio card and I use it for general use, listen to mp3, etc, with no problems, with jack and also pulseaudio as the sound servers in 64studio / ubuntu / Linux Mint.
What media player are you using? Is jack the audio server, and if so what is the jack command (line below "jack is sarting" in the message window of qjackctl)? Have you tried jackified and non jackified media players? Could it be a bad exported mp3?
Or maybe it is just that you don't have installed a proper mp3 decoder, if so, gentoo users can help better than me.
Cheers! Pablo

Thanks man,
you put me on the right track - I went into audacious config and changed mixer from HW:0,0 to pcm default and now it works!
