M-Audio Firewire?

Post by spm_gl »

I'll be buying an M-Audio Profire Lightbridge soon, for mobile 32-track recording, and was wondering whether I could use it in the mastering suite while it's not on the road. Haven't found much Linux-related info yet. Does anybody here succesfully use the M-Audio Profire range?

M-Audio Firewire interfaces are not supported under linux. And if M-Audio continues to
not provide the necessary information to write drivers this won't change.

BTW using a device for mobile recording that doesn't even have a single analog input
seems a little strange.

We have 24 (or actually 48, if we stack) channels of ad/da conversion, so we really only need a adat-fw interface. But only presonus and m-audio seem to make any, and neither seem supported. Basically, we want to use a notebook as a backup and quick-edit solution behind our Fostex D2424.

There's also the RME digiface, but that needs a cardbus adapter, which makes it more expensive (and not sure if it'll work).

The Digiface is supported and i use its brother, the multiface, for years without any problems.
The Digiface has only 3 Adat I/Os though, i.e. it is limited to 24 channels in and out, which otoh
would make it the perfect companion to your 24 I/O mixer.

After a bit of research, it looks like I'll go the RME route again (we've been using a 9632 for 4 years now, without any problems). But I'll need the whole shebang, pci, pcmcia, multiface, digiface. Ouch. The multiface & pci are meant for the mastering system, but can then be used on the road too. Oh well, another month of dry bread.

There are adapter cards[PCMCIA -> PCI] and [Expresscard -> Pcie], price around 15 euro.
So RMEs expensive PCI/PCIe card is not necessary.
I don't see a necessity for you to get the multiface, if you can use the AD/DA of the D2424
as ananlog frontend for the digiface.

I still need a decent quality inter4face for the mastering suite. And stand-alone adat units are far more expensive than complete interfaces. So my plan is to use the multiface for the analog inserts, and for mobile recording if needed.
AFAIK, the cardbus-pci adapters can be problematic, at least RME state that on their site. Anybody have any experience here?

I'm using an cardbus->pci adapter with Ricoh chipset. Works like a charm.
Costs around 16 euro new at ebay.
