Out from the shadows ...

Post by actorzero »

Hi all,

figured it was about time I posted a hello and came out from the lurking I've been doing. I'm stoked to be here and have already had copious amounts of help and ideas just fro m reading the many interesting and useful opinions of the peeps here.

My name is Jon and I'm from New Zealand (yeah thats where they made the Lord of The Rings films) and I've been making music on and off since I was thirteen which is coming on twenty years I guess. Over the years I've tried a few things ranging from the height of four track tape recorders through to settling on Cool Edit Pro in the earlier part of this decade.

This year heralded a huge computing upheaval for me and it has turned out to be the best thing I ever did. After buying a new rig (the previous one lasting 7 years running win XP - not sure how!) I decided for both philosophical and financial reasons to go open source. I knew nothing about linux except that it had a mixed "reputation". However the good words about it came from people I trusted.

My biggest concern was the state of the media creation software available. So i set about RTFM for the best part of a month and settled on Linux Mint and have since added many little extras including some of the KICK ASS music software. I will NEVER go back!

Anyway - I've started in on a new musical project and have done a lot of writing. I'm writing rock music mostly. In the weekend I bought a new mic and I thought time to state my presence. So hello ... I'm Jon and I'm a Linux Musician.

My gear at the moment is:

Desktop

Quad core 2.33 GHZ Intel
4GB Ram
P5QL Pro MB
22" Widescreen
M-Audio Delta 66 Soundcard.

Sound gear

OMNI I/O breakout box for the delta
(which includes preamps and monitoring etc. if you can get one of these its well worth it)
Peavy Studio Pro M2 Condenser Mic
(my new purchase - can't find much about them but so far its clear as a bell - and it was damn cheap at under $125 US - half its normal price)
SM58
M-Audio KeyStation 88
Aria Pro II Guitar (sort of looks like a Gibson SG)
Fender Princeton 112 Amp
Yamaha Acoustic Guitar (with mic/pick up and pre amp)

Software

Ardour
Rosegarden
Hydrogen
ZynSubAddFX Synth
JACK
Qsynth and many more (in fact I finally made the processor yeild tonight while running them all at once and doing live effects processing.)
