Hi from Malaga

Post by kyokurider »

Hi everyon@

New to the forum, i work with computers so to explain, and also try to play drums which aint as easy as it looks. I am a completly ignorant when it comes to audio recording, i worked with networks, sysadmin, web, and all the things that relate to those fields, but i am starting with like audio recording now.
I have migrate a few of the companies servers from winblows to linux (debian) and i am currently using Ubuntu and Debian as desktops.
So thats why i am interested in developing my knowledge with the community instead of going for the actual marketing/commercial path, i am not a pro so i suppose that makes the move easier.

Well, i dont think i am going to write much more for the moment as theres plenty to read for me right now ;-), so i welcome myself here with your support, thanks.

Welcome inigo!

It might be a good idea to setup one of those machines with a audio focues distrobution. 64 Studio is based on Ubuntu(Ubuntu is based on Debian) and AVLinux is based on Debian. That would pre-install a lot of really good audio applications and be configured to handle audio really well.

Buenas Íñigo :D

I'm spanish as well (from Tarragona).. and I play drums as well.. glad to have you here :D
What style of music do you play ? I play rock-based music (punk-harcore) in a local band.

I started both with linux audio and at this forum, at the same time (a bit less than one year ago) and although I'm still a newbie I am able to do much more things now than when I started.

I found a lot of help to tune up my system at the forum itself and also at the LinuxMusicians wiki, specially the system configuration section.

Regarding the apps: Hydrogen is a great drum sampler. Rosegarden (midi sequencing/recording) can also be useful (specially if you have an e-drum, I find Rosegarden/Hydrogen a great pair).
And a lot of other interesting apps that you will discover simply by following this inspiring forum ;)

Welcome !

Hi,

THanks for the welcome,

@kaimerra: i actually have a system with a PIV at 3ghz and 2gb of ram or something like that which is going to be my try and error machine, for what i have read i believe studio64 is quite stable and robust, so i think i will give it a go, i believe i am going to install a couple of distros see what they're like until i know exactly what i need and where i am going and then probably stick to whatever is the result of my frustrating tries

@yeri: hey man, cool that you play drums as well, we are doing classic rock covers at the moment, i stopped playing for several years and i am back to the r'n'r (never dies whatever they say), jimmie hendrix, cream, led zep, ac/dc, thin lizzy, pretty good fun i am lovin it.
My idea is to setup a computer in order to help with my studies on the instrument, load it with play alongs, being able to record rehearsals and staff and then start to edit and i suppose do the things that people do at studios, but on a more peasant, simple and common way if you know what i mean. hehe.
I heard about those apps, not into hydrogen as i am suppose to do what that does  , use to have a Roland kit, but i went back to acoustics, is just not the same and i am glad i did cause theres so much work to do.
Thanks for the links, i already visited those..

Regards,
Iñigo

In fact you can connect the midi output of your roland kit to hydrogen (through jack) and use it to reproduce the drum sounds when hitting the pads.. I use in that way.
There are great drumkit libraries out there.. lately I'm using rockstock from analogue drums http://www.analoguedrums.com/details-rs.php
I also prefer playing the acoustic drumkit, but the electronic has some advantages too (more confortable to play at home, easier to record/edit, good quality, ...). Just a matter of context :D

Regards and welcome!

hey man, sorry i did not activate automatic responses.

I did actually sold the roland to get the acoustic, they are obviously different animals, but playing on acoustic kits give a much better feeling and trains my ears i guess. Thanks for the input mate.
