Glad to have become part of Linux Musicians :) I'm excited about not using Windows anymore, well as much as I can get away from it, and looking to fully unlock the musical potential of running Linux Mint and chatting with my new comrades of course :)

Cheers from Colorado,

Mark

Hey,
Great to have you on board Mark!

What kind of musical ventures are you doing on your Linux Mint system?

Well I was in a metalcore band but now doing something slightly different from that. Kind of a "Day To Remember" sound mixed with some heavier indie-rock kind of stuff. It's still a baby at this point and hopefully I'll be able to work out some problems I'm having with Audacity or eventually figure out how Ardour works. Seems complicated. I've used Audacity quite a bit but the linux version runs (and has problems) moreso than the Windows one. I definitely want to avoid using my VirtualBox for this so we'll see what happens.

What issues are you having with Audacity?

If I recall correctly, version 1.2ish had problems with pulseaudio if present. I do not know what Linux Mint's sound setup is like, but It may be something to look into.

There are some good videos on getting started with Ardour at the link below. Audacity is great for digital editing and doing single track work. But when it comes to multi-track, Ardour is much more powerful and usable.

Also, the wiki here is a good place for information as well as our collective brains. :)

Yeah I have read a lot about the Pulse audio problems.

The only issue I am having is with recording from my Blue Snow Ball USB microphone. I record a track at 44100 Hz. I play it back and it's slow and warbly. I change the tracks rate to 90000Hz and sounds close to what my voice sounds like. Then I tried changing the Project Rate to 90000 and it doesn't come out right at all. So it's quite strange and very frustrating. I've been working on it off and on for about a week and haven't had any luck.

I'll eventually graduate to Ardour but I don't know if I need ALL of that functionality. It does look slick. But I am having trouble figuring out how to to record with it as it looks like I must use JACK to allow sound to get passed correctly.

However, with Audacity I pretty much plug it in and go. Simply changing the audio source and away I go. All that is except for the vocals. I really like the simplicity of Audacity so I'd like to just figure this one thing out. I've read elsewhere that there are some issues with the Snow Ball. But I know that the slow and warbly sound is a software problem.

Any thoughts on this would be great! I do have another work around as i have as Tascam DP-01FX digital workstation that I could use. But hoping to make all the magic happen on my Linux machine :)

Cheers

Sound like your usb microphone runs at 96kHz, maybe even 88.2 (unlikely though). Quite possible that the driver doesn't "know" this.

I thought that could be the case too, but I left it plugged in while running the Test and it said it supported 44100 and 48000 so why would it record at such a weird level?

Perhaps it supports 44.1 and 48, but your driver/control doesn't set it.
96kHz is not weird at all, but rather becoming standard for professional audio.

Hmm, I'm really not sure where else to look on the subject. Nothing really concrete to try on Audacity's site either. I wonder if Ardour handles these sorts of things better?
