I'm sick of iPods. I'm especially sick of whatever weird thing Jobs built in to make it so difficult for (non-iTunes) software to access these devices. It occus to me, why haven't I heard of portable media players designed to run open source operating systems?
I looked it up online, and so far I've found the Neuros Audio 442. Has anyone used one of these before? Are there other media players out there like this (with at least a 40g harddrive)?
iPod alternatives? Neuros?

I don't know of devices designed to run open-source os's - there are several devices out there that should work with the open-source rockbox firmware, but afaik that's not endorsed by the producers of the devices.SixFingers wrote:I'm especially sick of whatever weird thing Jobs built in to make it so difficult for (non-iTunes) software to access these devices. Hi!
As raboof said, rockbox is a nice opensource solution for a lot of mediaplayers. Even (most of) the ipods perform nice with rockbox. I've used an ipod video with rockbox for a year and it performed good.
