Recomeneded Distro

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Recomeneded Distro

Post by cianoc »

What is the way to go these days? Back in the day I used to use KXStudio, but that seems to be just repos these days.

What would be a good lightweight distro to pair with it?

Or is AVLinux a better option? Or even Ubuntu Studio?

I really just want something low maintenance that works and has up to date software, and doesn't require too many resources. Which in the past has meant staying well away from Ubuntu.

In particular I'd like to be able to run windows VSTs, Reaper and to use my class compliant audio driver.

In general I'd highly recommend LibraZiK 3 studio http://librazik.tuxfamily.org/base-site-LZK/english.php (based on Debian 10). I use it for professional radio work.
It's possible to use WinVST with it, but I haven't tried it yet.
The latter works well under AVLinux using Carla.

I'm on Ubuntu Studio since July. Works very well, but it's not compatible with the KXrepos. Software and kernel is up to date. Personally I found Debian more stable though.

Hi,

AV Linux sounds like a good fit for you, it is 'install and use' and the latest version has WinVST working OOTB with LinVST as well as Carla. The downside of AVL is it currently uses Systemback as it's installer and it is a bit cagey to install on brand new-ish computers with NVMe SSD.2 drives and is fussy about UEFI on some systems. That said on most systems a few years old it installs just fine..

I should also point out that AV Linux is currently transitioning from pure Debian to MX Linux to take advantage of their excellent ISO and installer tools so it will still be on a Debian base with an extra layer of MX goodness.. There is an early Release Candidate of the 'new' AV Linux MX Edition if you want to try it as well. They both boot easily on a USB key so you can get a good idea of what to expect.
