Fixing broken packages UbuntuStudio

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Fixing broken packages UbuntuStudio

Post by Linux_Voivod »

Trying to install Ubuntustudio, but I keep on getting the same errormessage, 'Can't fix your problems, you're keeping broken packages'. In synaptic packetmanager, I get the same error, that UbuntuStudio can't install, since there are broken packages. I tried quite a lot already, also a GRUB -> recovery mode -> DPKG repair broken packages. I'm running out of ideas how to fix it and I have no clue what's going wrong. Anyone an idea what to do to fix this?

ps the attachment show the error in Dutch, but I translated this in the errormessage as written above.

LANG=C is to set environment so output is in English so most people here can read it, it's not part of the command. I forgot Ubuntu uses only sudo. Try:

Code: Select all

LANG=C; sudo apt install -f
And please copy and paste the text from the terminal and post here in code tags. It's much easier to read than an image, and easier for you to post.

In the meantime I upgraded those 16 packages, but the error remains.

First it would be interesting which package is broken?
Run

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep ^..r
to list them.
On the road again.

Can it be, given the fact that Carla is 30gb and me having only 25gb free, this Carla is the culprit?

What makes you think Carla is 30GB? My whole production setup takes up 12GB including Carla. I just checked and Carla uses 148MB of disk space. It surprised me it even takes that much.
You can check on your system:

Code: Select all

dpkg-query -W --showformat='${Installed-Size}\t${Package}\n' | grep carla
To show the disk size of all your packages in size order:

Code: Select all

dpkg-query -W --showformat='${Installed-Size}\t${Package}\n' | sort -nr
If you think your disk is full, check with

Code: Select all

df
I'm a bit out of ideas what is causing your error message. You can see if any packages are actually being held by

Code: Select all

apt-mark showhold

Ah, I read somewhere that Carla will be about 30gb, with some other studio stuff

apt-mark showhold gives no results. Is there any alternative to Ubuntustudio? The thing is that with audacity recording gives me a headache, so I thought Ubuntustudio would help me out, reading that Ardour is integrated and Carla. But at the moment the headache remains.

I got it installed. Somehow by one of the commands, I found out that a certain package was missing. Libavcodec-extra. To install this one I needed to install libavcodec-extra58 and from there on all the broken packages were removed, after which I could finally install the damn ubuntustudio-audio!

Now struggling with enabling realtime permissions, but that's for tomorrow.

You're commands/ideas have been helpful, so thanks for that! The terminal was the other device that finally gave me the hint to find as a Sherlock Holmes, the above missing links.

Aaah, so you were trying to install ubuntustudio-audio metapackage on top of standard ubuntu. I didn't know that was a thing and thought you were trying to install the full Ubuntustudio live image to hard disk which is what I did last time I tried it. I wiped it out a few days later when it wouldn't work properly; I filed it under beta software not for primetime and installed AVLinux instead. Many people seem to have it working to their satisfaction though.
Those suggestions and commands would still have been somewhat pertinent to the questions you asked. The command line will often help solve issues or perform tasks which are much harder or impossible using GUI.
