Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now?
Guitarists take note of this guitarist's (Andy Gill) rather unique style. It predates U2, but it has elements of that repetitive "echo" ostinato rhythmic style, with a healthy dose of Captain Beefheart's dissonance and just-plain-weird chord voicing. Also, the distortion tone he gets really emphasizes the "jagged buzzsaw" playing technique he employs. I really like his playing, but I imagine most folks would find it too "tonally abrasive".
Just a head's up, the band is called "Gang of Four" for good reason. The lyrics are rather marxist/political:
"Capital, it fails us now. Comrades let us seize the time."
Or just plain anti-heroic:
"Only yesterday I said to myself, the things I'm doing aren't good for my health.
I feel like a beetle on its back, and there's no way for me to get up.
Love will get you like a case of anthrax. And that's one thing I don't want to catch".

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now?
Good band Gang Of Four, I liked them back in the 80s. I'm just listening to Gang Of Four - live on Rockpalast German TV show 1983 (full show) which was a YT recommendation from the above linked video. Excellent show and decent sound considering it's from an old TV show.

I never quite drew a parallel to U2 although I liked their first 2 albums which were from the same era. More akin to Killing Joke, The Fall, and even The Cure.

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now?
Gang of Four is a bit funkier than The Cure, though
Edit: I am listening to M83 - Do It, Try It. Really love their Junk album, I've listened to many of their albums but it's the one that I liked the most. And of course, it's the one that many of their fans actually dislike, as it often happens

Excellent band, but not a great song. King Crimson have had a few different lineups over the years, and with different lineups comes unique songs/sounds. (ie, Some lineups sound completely unlike. You would swear they were different bands).khz wrote: King Crimson - People
For guitarists, I think the early 80's lineup (which "People" comes from) may be especially interesting. At this time, they were exploring "world sounds" (years before it became "popular" to do that). In particular, they used african poly-rhythms where the two guitarists would simultaneously play patterns that were in different meters. The net effect was a "shifting echo" where the 2 parts constantly shifted in and out of "sync". They also favored arabic tuning/scales, unlike the Western 12-tone equal tempered tuning almost universally used in popular music.
Technically, they are very advanced, so expect some impressive tehcnique. Guitarist Robert Fripp is very proficient, especially with synth guitars (which require very precise picking to avoid "glitches"), The bass player is probably the world's most proficient player of a Chapman stick (half bass, half guitar played with a tapping technique). Drummer Bill Bruford is world renowned for his expertise, and during this period he delved heavily into employing lots of percussion you don't normally hear in pop music. (So drummers should check him out for new ideas and creative inspiration).
The band should provide a novel and interesting listening experience for most musicians.
For the early 80s lineup, I recommend the following:

The mid 1970's lineup is the inspiration (and model) for much of the "progressive metal" heard decades later (ie, Tool). I recommend:
