Folks:
This, I am sure, is a dumb question. I am used to using Patchage, despite its faults, and would now like to move to Carla. I use Ubuntu Studio as my distribution (and, in fact, they've dropped Patchage in favor of Carla).
After checking the "external" box in whichever Carla configuration menu it appears in, I can see all of my various audio devices and channels, including some that are external interfaces connected via USB. What I *can't* see are USB-compliant external instruments and controllers whose ALSA MIDI connections Patchage used to show me. Does Carla also serve as a patchbay for these? If not, what does?
All the best,
T.

Re: Carla newbie
Are you using Jack? You have to activate the "Bridge ALSA to Jack ..." button in Ubuntustudio Controls under Audio Setup.
Re: Carla newbie
Ok, hadn't done that, but I still don't see external devices like controllers and hardware synths that "just appear" in Patchage when I bring it up. I think that switch just activates a2jmidid, no?
