What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

AVLinux 2020.5.10 post install issues, Lexicon Omega, Crackling, AVA Plugins, RT Kernel question

Post by windeguy »

I ran in to some issues after installing AVLinux 2020.5.10 on Dell Optiplex2020 SFF:

1) It will not recognize 4 inputs for a Lexicon Omega. It only will let me run 2 inputs and 2 outputs using JACK.
This was an issue I fixed in the previous version of AVLinux by moving to a different USB port , but that is not making a difference now.
Any suggestions?

2) I also had the "cracking audio" problem from time to time even with the Lexicon Omega in 2 input and 2 output mode.

3) I have Harrison Mixbus32C. I am trying to run the AVA plugins but they don't render properly. Harrison says OpenGL 3.2 or lower will not render the plugins properly. I checked and OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 18.3.6 is installed. So that is likely the issue. How do I best update OpenGL to a revision that will render the AVA plugins properly and not break something else?

This is a question and not a bug:
4) I would like to test the RT Kernel. How do I install that kernel correctly so I can go back and forth between the default low latency kernel and the RT kernel? (getting Grub to let me boot either on startup?)

I'm on a previous version, so I don't know if this applies to your version, but I get my kernels from here:

Code: Select all

# AVL Kernels
deb http://www.bandshed.net/kernels/apt/ buster main
I had an issue trying to install the kernel, so I'll include the solution here, in case you'll be facing the same issue:
In installing the kernel, I encountered the follow issue:
The EFI runtime is disabled on the RT kernel, which resulted in the following warning when running grub-install:

Code: Select all

EFI variables are not supported on this system..
And the grub was not installed. I solved this by manually adding "efi=runtime" to the kernel options at boot time. Just in case anybody else was having this problem.
I'm also running AVLinux on a Dell (Precision 3431), and I've been having some freezes on the lowlatency and rt kernels, would like to know if you've experienced the same.

martibs,

Before I saw your reply I added an RT kernel by adding the repository in Synaptic that Gmac has on the AVlinux home page, then I installed the latest RT kernel, updated grub and I can boot either the real time kernel or the original low latency kernel that came with AVLinux. So far the performance difference is significantly better on the RT kernel. It does not have any apparent installation issues on my Dell 9020 with i5 processor.

I am currently using a Behringer XR18 as my USB mixer and that is working properly recognizing all 18 ins and outs.
I will go back and check the Lexion Omega, but I suspect it will still not be recognizing it's 4 inputs properly.

I use a program named One Man Band that simulates an arranger keyboard, and that needed a tweak to allow AVlinux to run it as a 32 bit program. I googled the error it was having and found what to install to get it working.

I am still having problems with Harrison Mix Bus AVA plugins rendering properly in Mixbus. It turns out that the version of OPENGL has to be higher than my system defaults to. There might be away to override this, but I am still working on that issue with Harrison support to force the OPENGL level higher when I open Mixbus.
