Vst's Windows Installers On Linux (Ubuntu Studio Focal Fossa)

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Vst's Windows Installers On Linux (Ubuntu Studio Focal Fossa)

Post by jerefernand3z »

In linux, can you run Windows vst's Installers (like LABS, Komplete Start, etc)?

In case you can run the installers (through Wine or some other tool), how is it done?

Thank you very much and I hope this question can be answered

Code: Select all

wine Downloads/SomeInstaller.exe
I tend to have own wineprefix for testing stuff, so that if unstall does not work I can remove whole wineprefix. So something like this:

Code: Select all

WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-tmp wine Downloads/SomeInstaller.exe

Many Native Instruments products download as .iso files. But in most linux, the installer will report it failed to download,
but in actuality, the .iso file exists in

.wine/drive_c/users/your-username/Downloads. Copy it somewhere safe
Next you need to mount the .iso file like this:

mkdir /home/y-o-u/iso-files (Or call the destination iso-files folder whatever you like)

mount -t udf /home/y-o-u/.wine/drive_c/Users/y-o-u/Downloads/name-of.iso -o unhide /home/y-o-u/iso-files

(This step mounts the original downloaded .iso file where it first arrived in your computer,
but it can be placed where you prefer.)

cd /home/y-o-u/iso-files

(in this mounted location, you will see the contents of the .iso, installers, readme's etc

wine name-of-installer.exe

If that is successful, run Native Access, and use it's 'add serial number' option.
You will probably need to restart Native Access for it to
display the registered plugin on the 'Installed' panel.

I also back up the installers, as well as the iso's, for good luck.

NI are the only dev I've seen using .iso files for music software. Some newer NI products,
as well as Kontakt, are not part of that group, and will install without the unusual steps.
Not sure about Komplete Start.
Cheers
