That link to whatsapp is fake. It is a direct download for an Android .apk file. Do you not see it? Attached screenshot below...

Weird. It's not uBlock as I also run that.

May it be the comment was edited before I saw/quoted it? Or do you still see it?

Seems to differ with browser/theme. I can't see it in firefox with flat gold theme. With the default theme in firefox it renders as a single period/full stop. I tried the default theme with falkon and it renders as a series of underscores. Sunrat looks to be using custom css, so that will be why it's seen. If you edit the posts or quote them you can see the link in them. The bot set the colour of the link as white and the size the smallest, which will be why there is a difference of seeing them I expect.

Ah ok, now I see it! I just edited my quote post, where I didn't see the extra link with size=1 added.

Damn that's a devious one. That link is rendered as a dot even smaller than a period!

Aaah that explains it. I use Prosilver Dark Edition theme so my text is always white on dark, as shown in the screenshot I posted. The white text wouldn't show on a white background.
Including a spam link as a tiny dot image as @Impostor just posted seems rather pointless.
Damn bots are tricksy!

Can it have anything to do with browsers prefetching links? (Which I've turned off in firefox, of course. Nonsensical "feature" that is.)

Prefetch disabled here. Spam links are usually posted so unsuspecting users click on them, which isn't going to work if they are invisible.
