Guitarix MIDI Groups Issue

If I turn on an effect in preset 1, then switch to preset 2 which also has an effect that uses the same midi message, it will now be on as well. So say preset 1 has a distortion ("Group") that is controlled by MIDI 22 and preset 2 has a chorus ("Group") that is controlled by MIDI 22, if you turn on the distortion in preset 1, the chorus will be on in preset 2 when you switch to it. This is confusing to say the least and was making me think there was some sort of autosave feature.

I've used Midi Monitor to verify that just the program change message is being sent when switching presets, so it doesn't seem my foot controller is the issue.

Any suggestions? If no solution can be found, then I may end up just switching presets even to turn on /off a single effect, which would require making many more presets but c'est la vie.

Yes, that's the default in guitarix.
Say you've a effect, a wahwah for example, which is part of multiple presets, when you switch the preset you would keep the state you've set with the midi controller so that your controller and the effect been in sync.
If you don't want/need that, you could select the option "Include MIDI in preset" under the "Options" menu or in the Midi Controller view under the Engine menu. That will bind controller states to the preset only. Note, you need to resave your preset when you change this option.

I noticed without "Include MIDI in preset" on then the same effect stays on after switching presets, yes. However with it on, then the effect of the same midi value will stay on. Is this what you have noticed too?

No, when I use "Midi in preset", and take your first example, say I've switched on distortion with midi cc22, then switch to preset 2, were the chorus is controlled with midi cc 22, the chorus is off when I load the preset. The chorus will only load "On", when I've saved the preset with state on for chorus.

For me, in the patch view it visually appears to be the case that the effects' states are based on what was previously saved, but in the live view mode it shows what is actually on or off. I am using the MeloAudio MIDI Commander btw.

Which version of guitarix do you use?

I ask because I remember there was a bug related to this, still didn't know exactly any-more when we've fixed it. So, regardless which version you use, checkout guitarix from git and report back when you are still not satisfied.

OK with the version I already have (0.36.1), I can actually get the behavior I want as follows:

In engine->midi controller, check "include MIDI controllers in presets" (as tramp suggested above). When assigning a control to a foot switch, save the preset (preset selection->save changes). The thing I should also have been doing was deleting the midi controller settings in other presets.

Now the only down side is when changing patches I need to double tap a switch to toggle an effect state (this sort of resets the switch). I still need to try the new version tramp suggested, which will allow guitarix to send midi messages to the foot controller to keep it in sync:

Yes, you should.
0.36.1 was released 2017, a lot of work has been done since then.
