how to turn Ubuntu into a home-studio in 2 steps

Post by matmc2 »

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, and I wanted to record some music for http://www.magentamusic.eu: I needed a real time kernel and Ardour2.
What is a real time kernel?
It's a linux core optimized for low-latency applications, just like music recording.
Ardour2 is a DAW, that is a program useful to digitally record and edit your audio material.
I've upgraded my system in 2 simple steps: I opened a terminal and I wrote this.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-rt
sudo apt-get install ardour
When I booted the PC, I had to choose between my "usual" kernel and the RT (real time) one.
I tested this configuration with a TASCAM US 122 USB soundcard and it is working fine!
