What I want, is to use Carla in LMMS.

So I went to the obs (open build service) and installed Carla, for openSUSE tumbleweed.

The good news is that Carla does show up in LMMS. (LMMS appimage version)


When I tried to insert a (windows) vst into Carla, I am getting an error about an invalid elf header.

Could it be this error, is because this Carla version is not compiled with wine support?

I am already also asking around on the openSUSE forums, but when it comes to Carla they don't have a clue.

( I did enable the experimental options in Carla. )

The vst I tried was 4 front piano, which work fine in Vestige. I also tried another vst that works in Vestige, but same error in Carla.

I think I will have to compile Carla myself, but first like to be sure, if this error is an compile issue. (Carla not compiled with wine support)

That was the problem with previous version of Carla from official openSUSE sources.

The problem might be solved, I still need to test it.

I need to download Carla VST instead of Carla. This made me smile because this did remind me of many post on this forum about other distro.


OpenSUSE has a new package maintainer for at least LMMS and Carla.

I should not have to use the LMMS AppImage file any more.


Another reason why I want Carla in LMMS is about Linux VST.

Next thing to try though Carla will be the newer Calf plugins.

Then this week I found out, suse now has its own KX like repositories.

I am trying to help the opensuse LMMS and Carla maintainer by testing his packages.

Linux 32 bit and windows 32 bit and 64 bit are greyed out.

I can load 4 front piano through vestige, but can't add it through Carla.

Can somebody confirm this should work, and I am not doing this wrong?

Still for me this is progress, I was able to use Amsynth in lmms through Carla.

So I probably did not install those. ( although as far as I understand it, they should have been installed )

Back to the suse maintainer of carla.

I am starting to fear, I might end up compiling Carla myself.
( If I want everything possible working )

The dependency mingw was mentioned.

That sounded familiar, but it took me a while before I remembered what it was.

If I recall right, Falk tx ones helped me with that.

MingW from the ( Gnu is Not Unix ) people.

In my own words, to compile windows code on Linux, which then can be used through wine.

Learned something interesting though.
I can compile Carla on the obs. (open build system) of openSUSE.

I have to start an home there (did this already), install a command line interface, and on the obs a virtual machine will be created.
So compiling without installing all the libs and dev files on you're own system.


From what I saw I could even set up a windows system, but much more interesting also allot of Linux Distro.
So If I build a rpm for suse, I could test if it works on fedora too, if I get bored.

I am starting to wonder though, how badly do I want Carla to load windows vst, something Vestige in LMMS already does.

The other reason why I wanted carla, was to use native Linux plugins and that already works.

Maybe I needed a distraction though, from my attempt to make a house track, like house from around 1988.
For months now working on it, and I could not put my finger on it what was wrong.

Well allot it seems, like me creating melodies, rhythm wise to much deviating, from the bassline and the 4 to the floor.
Allot of house has hardly a melody, its a loop over and over again.

Kraze the party, piano and bass are almost ever playing the same rhythm.
I covered that one, but only now start to realise what makes house, house.

Its not about a melody its about a groove, to dance to.

Is there a problems with Carla and LMMS in openSUSE TW, especially with geekosdaw repo?

I am using LMMS and Carla from the official repositories. ( not geekos daw )

LMMS is fine, Carla is missing one or two features.
Mingw has to do with compiling Carla.

I had searched the net, but could not find a link for just adding the geekos repositories.

I only could find a one click install, for geekos OS but since I am on thumbleweed, not leap I do not want to risk it messing up my installation.

In the past already had allot of update issues, because of all the extra repositories I had added, so I am more carefull this time around.

A few suggestions
1. get an external drive, and make a bootable testing installation(s).
Having just one system that must be 'guarded', in the volatile
world of linux audio, makes you a hostage, instead of a creator.

2. Install the linux Reaper demo (simply extract to a folder, or run the installer
(A free temp Reaper version for these corona-times may also be out there for a while)
The linux Reaper will load native linux native vsts. You can compare notes between various linux daws
to narrow down the source of problems.

3. Install wine-staging, and the LinVst windows plugin wrapper, put all your windows plugins
in one path, and use linvstconvertree (it opens a simple gui) to make your
windows vsts have a wrapped linux vst version next to them, to be used in linux daws.

There is good info at the linvst website read-me's that you can make good use of!

It's great news that Suse now has an audio repo and maintainer, beyond the OSBS!!!!

Well I already have a back up OS for if I mess up my Linux installation.

It's windows 10 pro.

I build this pc a few months ago. Both Linux and windows have their own 1 terra byte disk.
I am worried about even trying to boot windows though, It might take a while because of all the updates it probably wants to install.

If I only wanted to make music, things would be allot more simple.

Install a music specific distro and you're done.

I could free up some disk space, and go triple boot though.



But for now, from a music producing view, I probably just need to be patient, and wait what the package maintainer of Carla for openSUSE does.

I will have a Carla that can import Linux plug-ins in LMMS for sure, and maybe even windows vst.
