But Claudia is a Ladish front-end. This is why this type of thing is so confusing lol

I liked that ladish had sessions, and because I use cadence to start up jack, and because ladish is right there in the programs to open from within cadence, I woudln't have guessed that it's unmaintained. That is pretty odd, to keep a non-maintained program featured in what I assume is still maintained and recommended program such as cadence.

Are you sure it's not Catia that you are using rather than patchage? There is a button launcher for it in Cadence (under Tools I think?).

Yeah I installed patchage and launch it via that name. I suppose Catia is pretty much the same as patchage in functionality?

Essentially yeah, it might have a few more features.

Does Claudia work on your system even if it's based on Ladish? Have you tried?

No, that's what I originally meant when I said ladish wasn't launching.

Now I'm using patchbay. I'd like some more automation in the process of plugging my keyboard and having it produce sound, but I guess this is good enough.

hi,

try typing
a2j -e
in your terminal and leave it open. Does your keyboard show up then?

cheers

The 1st option enables dbus, which is needed for ladish.

:?: :?: :?:
What the hell would you tell us? I'm lost.
Is it a special language you use?
A special code which we need to decompile in order to make any use out of it?

Do you mind to explain to a old bonehead what you would explain with your above post.

OT It was a mistake on my part. Yes, I make mistakes sometimes. ;-)

I always claim I haven't used up this month's quota of mistakes...
but never reveal how big that quota is

Sorry my fluffy post! I was not expecting to cause so much confusion

Here my thoughts in detail - maybe a bit off topic meanwhile because it seems to be a pyton xdg problem at yamas system - but anyway:

I had the same problem at KX that my midi keyboard did not show up in claudia (which is based on ladish /phyton I suppose)
My clicking around resulted that stoping and starting Alsa midi Brigde in Cadence with export hardware was healing.
After a while being bored of clicking i managed this in the console window with

Code: Select all

precision@precision-HP-EliteBook-8560p:~$ a2j -e
hardware ports export
--- enable export of hardware ports
--- start

nowerdays i manage that even more supercool by a "Run Custum" entry in each Claudia Studio i create (a2j -e as level 0 command).

@ yama : dont give up ! fear and anger will lead you to the dark force :!:

I LOVE this thread - thank you Yama, I feel your pain.

Eight years ago - Christmas day 2010 - I, widowed, alone, and looking for something to do with my time, finally got my Ubuntu Studio system doing some useful things.
    QjackCtl running
MIFDI connecting to my $98 Yamaha piano
Two Qsynth engines (Strings and psRedGrand soundfonts)
    Audacity connected and tested.
pualse Audio head phones - Yes!

Wow! I was so happy!
I sat down at the piano.
I can not play the piano. I bought it, and was determined not to learn to play it, rather to learn to play WITH it. I knew no songs, had no rehearsed riffs. I had been sitting down, touching the keys, waiting for something i liked to happen. I would stand up, take a bow and walk away. I never tried to do more.

So, to my surprise, I did, in one take, no rehearsal, no do-overs, just sit down and record something I am proud of.

And Eight years later, I have not repeated that success with Linux Music software. I have moved my efforts twice, now onto a dedicated quad core i5 8GB system, and I have bought and equipped a similar system for my nephew. Now both my Nephew and I are disappointed by the almost-ready-for-prime-time experience of working on our music systems but not quite doing anything useful or sustainable with them.

Yet, I can not say "I feel like giving up with audio as a whole". I am ready to embark on learning to use "Non Session Manager ", as my nephew is due to arrive here in 10 days and I want to offer him some hope.

All the things that other posts mentioned: the shifting ground (apps that become obsolete), the challenging documentation (I am an engineer and embedded systems programmer but often overwhelmed) , the difficulty in creating persistent sett-ups, and the wanting to Just Play Music are frustrations for me as well, but reading these posts and the help and encouragement offered in this thread give me hope that it will be worthwhile to go on.

I will not yield to the dark side.

Rob
