System freeze - realtime kernel

I have Debian Stretch installed recently + the KX repos. In addition I also installed a realtime kernel via synaptic (Linux fox 4.9.0-6-rt-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Debian 4.9.82-1+deb9u3 (2018-03-02) x86_64 GNU/Linux)

It happend to me already twice that my complete system is freezing. Now I was playing with Ardour and tried to get the Multisampler Plugin (LSP) running with multi outs.... I was playing in the pin connection window. Mouse is moving but I can't open/close programs. I also can't open a terminal. I can restart the PC with REISUB. I don't know if it's due to Ardour or if there is any other problem.

Can it be a problem with the realtime kernel? Can I just deinstall the RT kernel and will Debian automatically use the old one?
I just have realized that I didn't install the kernel header files, are these important?

I checked the xorg log files, but as there is no time stamp in it I can hardly figure out if there is a problem.

If anyone has an idea what else I can check ...

It's a simple online chip: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)

With KXStudio 14.04 I never had any freeze.

I just ask because it is very similar to an issue you can run in to using nouveau driver in conjunction with realtime operations - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/no ... r_messages

Sounds like it could be a kernel problem though, boot in the low latency or regular version of the kernel, or any other version and see if you have the same problem. Kernel issues are pretty easy fix, there are many you try. Go back to basics and work your way up.

Sounds like it could be a kernel problem though, boot in the low latency or regular version of the kernel, or any other version and see if you have the same problem. Kernel issues are pretty easy fix, there are many you try. Go back to basics and work your way up.

Ok, I have the standard Debian kernel booted now which also gives me less (=none) xruns. I will use this for the next weeks and see if the I get again problems. Thanks!

Do I need a lowtancykernel? I get 10.7 latency @ 512 samples, with the standard kernel without xruns... should be ok,right?

Low latency is probably better but use what works.

Yup, I have both packages installed, because you said I have to .
Btw: I checked my RAM today -> no errors found.

Maybe wifi freezes, some rt kernels might cause wifi freezes with some wifi hardware/drivers.

I've had to disable wifi for one rt kernel I'm using and after that it's ok.

I'm using the RT kernel (4.9.0-8-rt-amd64) meanwhile again and I see often such messages in the journal:

Same happened with the previous RT kernel. Usually they make no problems and I read somewhere they are considered to be uncritical.
This evening again the system frozed. Ctrl+Alt+F1 was not possbile, but Alt+Print+REISUB.

The system froze at ~ 22:58. Maybe the NOHZ: local_softirq_pending 80 has something to do with it? Anybody else stumbled upon it?

I found that some freezes are due to using the XFCE compositing feature. I disabled it now and installed compton, which looks much better. Freezes happen also much more often when I'm using the RT - Kernel. I also saw now that I have xserver-xorg-video-nouveau installed in synaptic which confuses me as I have a simple intel online graphic chip. Maybe it's just pre-installed and not in use.

If the problems persist I try installing the mesa package and the latest kernel from the Debian Backports.
