I don't know much about this topic, but I really like Towa Tei (Tei Towa) from Japan.

Although what I meant by 'International Beats' is not only music made in 'other' countries because then IDM, hip-hop, rock, etc, can be made just about anywhere.

Rather it would be more like music that reflects local cultures. The thread would be an opportunity to share and explore 'different' music from all over the world. Sometimes it can sound rock, or pop, or like a ballad, but there should be clear local cultural overtones.

No, they don't tour much, nor performing live locally. They did tour about 2 years ago with the Ozric Tentacles (space rock somewhat in the same vein as Shulman) in Europe, couldn't play in Paris due to technical problems, here's the take from Sofia (music starts around 3:30).

I have the chance to live in Brittany where multi-secular cultural heritage was on the verge of dying a few decades ago but has been going strong since the 70' (a glimpse on the UNESCO website).

There were few attempts in the 90' to add an electronic touch in its music but it was too early and flopped, as the Celtic music was just accustomed to the use of electric guitars (like Dan ar Braz)

You probably already heard Denez Prigent in the Black Hawk Down OST. For the few people knowing what traditional musique bretonne has been through this was really huge

Nowadays, along traditional-style skilled musicians and great singers you can find nice beats like Plantec or Tchaïd

Yes, Dan Ar Braz. Malicorne is another one. Tri Yann also. It's great that these music are still being played and enjoyed.

In Ireland there's Clannad since quite some time, of which is Máire Brennan (and Enya).

Going just a bit more east there's Éric Marchand and the Carancebes taraf.

No, I did not know about Denez Prigent. I see he has made music with Lisa Gerrard of Dean Can Dance. OTOH, I do not like the images of that film stuck to the musical piece though.

Plantec is great ! I did not know Tchaïd - thanks for mentioning !

On the Québécois side there's Les Batinses "Parcomètres" and "Dereelium" and Les Charbonniers de l'enfer for instance. Or the very popular Mes Aieux - "Dégénération".

All of these bands draw from their respective cultures and add a modern touch, which is great.

I forgot IMG, that managed to mix ska/big band and that same traditional music in a funky fusion

The Gipsy Kings are my favorite international band, the percussion intro
on their concert album, and the general mix of rythym guitars and hand instruments
always nag at me to practice. Their music is the first audio medicine reached for,
if a dark cloud starts hanging around. Their Compass album reminds me of
some jovial coworkers I've had the pleasure of laboring with over the years.
