To add to tramps advice after removing guitarix, hit the reload button in your package manager (Synaptic). This will give you an updated look at what is sitting in the repos so you can install.

Another complication is occurring: system updating is stalling now.

In synaptic, clicking 'reload' and running 'downloading package information' runs to 98% and then stalls. In synaptic, the 'progress bar' goes to near completion, but goes into paralysis with just a bit left. Finally, after clicking 'cancel', synaptic returns this: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu zesty Release' does not have a Release file'.

Sudo apt-get update runs for a bit, then stalls on this line: 0% [Connecting to archive.ubuntu.com (2001:67c:1360:8001::17)] [Connecting to archive.canonical.com (2001:67c:1360:8c01::16)]

I'll try your suggestion anyway and see how that goes ... OK. The only parts of Guitarix remaining, according to synaptic, are the (1) gxplugins (2) gxvoxtonebender (3) libgxw0, and (4) libgxwmm0. I've used synaptic to effect 'complete removal' and I've clicked on 'reload'. Still, 'downloading package information runs most of the way, but stalls above the 90th percentile. It returns the same error message: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu zesty Release' does not have a Release file.

After re-starting, synaptic shows no remnants of Guitarix remaining, however, it will not reload. it stalls with this message: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu zesty Release' does not have a Release file.

The PPA:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu zesty
you have there is for Ubuntu 16.04 aka "Xenial". A stable version.
You have 17.04 aka "zesty".
Delete ppa and you should be rolling.
Open synaptic then goto settings-->repositories
Look for

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu

click on them, delete them, close and reload if prompt.
Just to be sure hit the reload button in synaptic and all should be well.

Hey, chibchan. Thanks.

I'm embarrassed to say that I can't find the ppa for xenial that you referred to....

OK. I found in synaptic > settings > repositories > 'software & updates' > 'Other Software' > ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu zesty main is checked. It's the only one that resembles the targets you mentioned, and it cannot be deleted. It can be unchecked.

Is there another way to get at those ppa's? The list inside the Software & Updates window seems limited, and shows the PPAs with checkboxes. The error message always refers to 'ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu zesty Release', but I can't find this being referred to.

You indicated that the offending ppa's can be deleted. In which list can they be deleted?

My bad
I was doing it the "debian way"
I guess unchecking is good enough.
It can be deleted after unchecking.

Unchecking that one led to a worse cascade of errors:

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/zesty/InRelease Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/ ... /InRelease Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/ ... /InRelease Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dis ... /InRelease Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/ ... /InRelease Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I re-checked the box for ppa.launchpad.net/inameiname/stable/ubuntu zesty main

Better to have one down than five!

I went to canonical ~inameiname and could not find any reference to or directory for zesty. Perhaps installing 17.04 'zesty' as a foundation was a mistake.

That should not of happened. But we're still here and the dam place didn't explode.
still, doesn't sound very good. I guess hopefully when you sort the guitarix and audio interface issue
you can do it all over again and not mix ppa's and chalk it up as experience.

I hardly know how to make sense of this, though. Do you mean that, by installing KXStudio repositories, I 'mixed ppa's'? If so, then there are plenty of articles on the internet recommending that this be done in order to add Cadence, Claudia, Carla, and the like that are, perhaps, outdated or too casual in this recommendation?

I'm sorry to say it, but you're probably right. The last several years, if I'm going to use Ubuntu I stick with the LTS releases and haven't regretted it. I'm actually using Elementary OS on my music machine, but it's pretty similar since the latest release is based on Ubuntu 16.04, so I'm still more or less using an Ubuntu LTS release. Get all of the latest audio stuff from the KXStudio repos (and if you do, make a donation to FalkTX, that guy works like a madman to keep those repos up to date).

Hi, Michael.

When you start with Elementary and then add the KXStudio repos, aren't you 'mixing ppa's', like I have apparently done?
