Ingen + Guitarix

Post by blablack »

Hello all,

I build a lot of synths with ingen and the ams.lv2 plugins (the port of the AlsaModularSynth to lv2) and I was thinking of adding Guitarix behind it to jazz the sound up.

I have many many questions about this :)
  • I am confused about a normal guitar setup with guitarix: should it be preamp -> amp -> cabinet? Even in the case of using it with a synth?
  • Should I be careful of the output level of my synth going into guitarix? should it be very hot, close to saturation?
  • As I am using Ingen, should I use the lv2 guitarix plugins directly into Ingen or would I bet better using the jack guitarix app separately. I guess using them directly in Ingen, I can plug very specific plugins inside the bowel of the synth (Big Muff Pi directly after the oscillators but before ther filtering phase) but then it goes back to my previous point and output levels.
Do you guys have experience with Guitarix and synth in general?

I hope it's not too much of a wide conversation!

I guess it depends on your workflow. Including the guitarix plugs in ingen will allow you to create separate effect chains easily, using guitarix main application after ingen will allow you to check out the bunch of online presets easily.

Usual setup for a guitar amp in guitarix is preamp -> tonestack -> cabinet, but sometimes the tonestack before the preamp will give you what you after.

For spicy up your synth sounds in ingen you may as well check out the GxPlugins from github, which been guitar pedal simulations, of course, but could give your synths as well the spice.

You'll soon find some great 'gain staging' combinations,
with distortions and modulations that can be nuanced, or outrageous,
great fun in any case, and useful in wide varieties of tones.
You might want to look at some multi-effect
chains in rakarrack or Guitar Rig 5 demo in wine, and replicate/enhance
the ones you like using Guitarix plugins, it's standalone, and
the ingens/ams you're familiar with.

Adding a cabsim plugin offers another range of control,
often underestimated, as many guitar speakers
are designed to 'break up' and distort, while others aim for
various levels of FRFR to output a pristine version for vocals,
keys, orchestrals, or the audio sum. And EQ plugins can
be anywhere in the chain where you find a good use!
Cheers
