problem with installing Muse Sequencer

Hello All,

I am having a problem getting the Muse Sequencer to run on my computer. I am running Ubuntu 15.10 and I have 15.6 GiB of memory. I downloaded it and the icon (the harp) appears on my launcher now. But when I click on the icon to launch Muse, it lights up as if it is opening, but nothing else happens, no interface opens. Have I missed a step or has anyone else seen this problem? Thank you for any help you can give, I'm new to Linux and trying to get my system set up to do what I need to musically.

Martin

Try running it from a terminal. That way you might see an error message.

I, myself, could not run it (neither the version from Debian Sid's repositories nor the one from KXStudio), as it would produce a segmentation fault. I ended up compiling Muse3 (not 2!) from source, and it works now.

I never got Muse to work on Ubuntu. It doesn't like jack provided by Ubuntu.
I filed a couple of bug reports.

I'll try compiling Muse 3 too.

Thank you both for your replies. I greatly appreciate it. I'm definitely a novice to both Linux and audio production---I'm a musician trying to get my system set up. I am not too familiar with Terminal, so I may not have done this correctly, but I simply typed "muse sequencer" (without the quotation marks) into Terminal and here's what I got:

muse: error while loading shared libraries: libmuse_core.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Did I do the command right to open in Terminal? and if so is my system not recognising the download of the program?

Thanks,
Martin

OK, to start muse you just type "muse". (You must have gotten some other error messages from your command.)

Now, it did recognize the muse command, but something (the referred library, which should have been installed with it) is missing. How did you install muse?

Thank you finotti. I tried typing both "muse" and "muse sequencer" and got same error message with both. So yes, it must have recognized the command.

I installed Muse by downloading it from the Ubuntu Software Center, a GUI that came installed on the computer where I can search for and download software. I just followed the steps it took me through and typed in my admin password when it asked. I then tried rebooting after installing to see if that fixed it but it didn't.

At the same time, I had also downloaded another program, "MuseScore" for music notation. This one downloaded and opens fine. Any ideas?

OK, so in principle, you've installed it "the right way". This means that libmuse_core.so should have been installed with it... (The error message is that this file does not exist.)

If you open a terminal and type

Code: Select all

ls -l /usr/lib/muse/modules/
what do you get? (Copy and paste at a reply.) In principle, libmuse_core.so should appear in the list...

Thank you for your help with this. I tried typing that in Terminal and I got

ls: cannot access /usr/lib/muse/modules/: No such file or directory

Any ideas?

Hmm... That's where muse is installed in Debian. Maybe it is different for Ubuntu... (Can any Ubuntu user check it?) If that is the place indeed, something went wrong with the install. If you want to, you can try to uninstall it and install again. Try it from the command line and look if there are any errors in the out put. (Post it here if you don't understand the output.)

To uninstall:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove muse
To reinstall:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install muse

The Ubuntu package of Muse is ancient. Ditto the version that ships with KXStudio as far as I can tell. Uninstalling old versions of muse and compiling muse3 from source is the best solution. I just compiled the most recent version from git on Mint 18 which is very similar to Ubuntu 16.04 and it runs OK.

In case it fails to compile or work it could be due to old packages & libraries being installed which would need to be updated.

I hate to say, I was a big muse user in my early days because it resembled cubase; I used to regularly compile it from source and belong to the mailing lists etc.

I was always having different problems and gave up and switched to Ardour which was a steep learning curve but has paid off in freeing me up to work on the music.

There are good tutorials if you wish to use Ardour and a lot of the Mixbus stuff (which is Ardour based) also applies.
