Does ALSA always provide /dev/midi?

Sorry for the super basic question. I just notice whenever I plug a MIDI device into my various machines, a /dev/midi device appears in the system. Is this how ALSA actually presents MIDI devices to the system or is it some kind of OSS emulation that I have running? (The ALSA-OSS package is not installed.) If the latter, how can I disable it?

It's an OSS emulation. I don't believe you can disable it, except if you compile the ALSA drivers with a C compiler symbol undefined (CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL and maybe more).
