Paul Battersby has just released a comprehensive orchestral collection:

The description from his site says:

Virtual Playing Orchestra is a free, sfz format, sample library that attempts to emulate multiple articulations of the solo and section instruments from a full orchestra using the best samples from Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, No Budget Orchestra, VSCO2 Community Edition, Phaded Productions, University of Iowa, Philharmonia Orchestra and extra samples from Mattias Westlund, author of Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra.

He has done quite a bit of meticulous audio processing to get the samples from such disparate sources to sound good together. Even Mattias Westlund considers this to be a worthy successor to Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra.

Cool. I hope he has a lot of download bandwidth.

One problem though -- I'm constantly tweaking nbo to improve it. For example, i've already got a new tuba section coming up, So he may have a lot of redoing work if he wants to incorporate those improvements.

He uses Microsoft OneDrive to host the zip. It's so broken that I couldn't even download.

I tried the link and it worked, started downloading for me. What exactly happened when you tried it? What do you mean by "broken"?

The page just reloaded. Maybe OneDrive requires cookies, I dunno. But I'm not giving Microsoft any cookies.

I have no idea what's going on there but try refreshing the download page on my web site. There is only a 1/3 chance you'll get the Microsoft One Drive link again.

Tony, be nice. I invited paul here. He doesn't use Linux (yet), and instead uses commercial software, including MS stuff. That's life. It's a moot point that you can't dl the package since you won't use it due to the licensing. (Tony won't use anything that forbids commercial use, as some of the CC licensed samples do).

Let paul go on, and explore the rest of the forums so he can see what's up with this linux, and free software, stuff before you introduce him to Stallman's evil twin brother.

I used Microsoft One Drive for no other reason than it met my file size and bandwidth needs. It has nothing at all to do with my operating system. I hope there are no incompatibility issues for Linux user, but you can refresh the page until you are provided with a different link.

As for licensing, my understanding is that there are no restrictions of any kind on the music that is made with the samples. I believe you are free to use the library to make music and then sell that music. The only time licensing is any issue is for anyone wanting to modify and repackage the samples, as I have done. Then it's necessary to give it away for free and provide proper credit.

Oh, Google drive doesn't work either, now I have no idea. Looks like it also requires cookies.

Well they would be able to do stuff if they are on the domain I'm visiting. I have all 3rd party requests disabled.

I suspect there may be some other reason that you can't download the .zip file besides disabling cookies. I tried disabling all cookies and then downloading from Microsoft One Drive and had no trouble.

How is your browser configured to handle links that point to .zip files? Perhaps that is the problem?

FWIW I just downloaded it with no problem using FF on ubuntu.
