Showing off Pianoteq VSTi

Hello,

I had a bit of time to fool around, so I recorded myself playing some piano ballad using the Pianoteq VSTi. I uploaded an mp3 there : http://www.mediafire.com/?1gm21zgmmy1

I prefer warning you : I am no piano expert, I learned playing by ears only (I don't read notes) and not full time because I am not so interested in being a technical geek when it comes to playing instruments. so forgive me if it sounds outrageaous to the ears of a confirmed piano player ... hmm hmm ...

The ballad is an old Mecano tune called Autumnatic Play. It's a bit gloomy but I find it very nice. I try to reproduce it as best as I could, given the fact that I never saw the music sheet. The original is full of "mistakes", probably on purpose. Apart from that, Mecano is a post-punk dutch band that had a bit of fame in the early 80's among the underground scene, not to be confused with the rather popish and tasteless spanish band ... ;)

The VSTi setting was a rather mellow grand piano preset that I changed a bit. I recorded in ardour and roughly and quickly mastered it for overall volume with Jamin. For the careful listener, you can hear the expression pedal (pianoteq goes that far!) and the hammer strokes in the high notes. A very clever soft instrument, I tell you!

What a nasty website.. Can't you find a better one to put your songs on? Or does anyone else knows some?

most of these free hosting sites are not to my liking but I don't own my own server space anywhere and I don't want to buy some space now. If someone knows better, speak up!

If you want to email me the file I will upload it to my web server and post a link here.

The latter website was a lot better...

The music part was great!

Why did you use a VST plugin? You 've a piano, isn't it?
And why don't you try linuxsampler with the available piano sample? I'm interested how that will sound:

Here you can read about linuxsampler and listen to a piano part made by dp http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/lin ... er-project

Here you can find the gig file: http://www.linuxsampler.org/instruments.html

the piano I have has builtin sounds (Kawai L1, given by a friend who got tired of it) and the sounds are crappy. I chose Pianoteq because it is NOT sample based, not like so many other soft piano libs out there. Pianoteq has studied a lot the aocustic of grand pianos and decided to generate these sounds instead of sampling real sounds. This allows much more flexibility in the expression, velocity, etc, does not require a bloated sample lib that would invade your disk space, and it works so nice on my system that I did not look further :)

It's a shame to use VST if there's also a good linux option ;)

maybe it sounds great to your ears but not to mine. My speakers do not forgive anything, I tell you!
by the way, there's no shame in using anything as soon as you find pleasure and inspiration in using it :D

You must admit it sounds pretty good... maybe a bit more sober and clean, but very real!

And yes you can use what you want. But I rather like to see a good development of LinuxSampler instead of buying expensive plugins... just my opinion ;)

And it doesn't cost you a 250 euro's...

anyway... I like the music part

Glad you like it :)
I learned the piano by myself with that piece of music among other stuff. The distance between understanding tones when you hear them and playing them flawlessly with your fingers is kinda large ... it took me some time to enjoy playing a bit of piano ...

Anyway, I agree in principle with you but I had a certain budget and I didn't mind buying a user licence when I realized how good it sounded. I am not so well off any longer though ...

many thanks for the hosting! I don't know how to take the compliment, I don't think I'm that good at playing ...
