alsa headphone problem

i recently installed Linux Mint 18 Mate and installed and it was working fine until i installed KX repos on top. according to several posts iv read it seems the problem lies within Alsa
i had no sound at all until in cadence i changed device/interface to hw:1 and now the sound only comes out of the speakers and even with connected headphones only the speakers play.
however when i run alsamixer output is "This sound device does not have any controls" and the only way i can get the controls is by pressing F6 and changing the device to HDA Intel PCH everytime i run alsamixer. the controls are not muted and are all set high.
the brigde in cadence is set to ALSA -> Loop -> Jack
i know it has something to do with the "hw0/hw1" and default sound card stuff but i dont understand how it works.
i suspect this is because of something im missing, or a setting somewhere but i cant figure it out. or is it pulse audio?
i have also searched for solutions on how to fix it but nothing i have tried has worked.
