Problems setting up JACK with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2

Post by Kse »

Greeting guys!

I recently got my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and am trying to setup JACK to use it as an audio interface (or at least input device). I am running the latest Ubuntu distribution (16.04). Here's what I've done so far:

>Edited the ulimit configuration so that it allows me as a user and the audio group (which I put myself in) realtime priority and unlimited memory lockup

>Disabled pulseaudio's autospawn so that I can kill it when I run QjackCtl. I don't think I'm gonna need to run them both at the same time.

However, when i try to start JACK through QjackCtl, it fails to start the DBus server, giving me the following error message:
14:41:42.272 Statistics reset.
14:41:42.290 ALSA connection change.

The problem seems to be in these two lines
Sun Jun 19 14:41:43 2016: ERROR: ALSA: cannot set hardware parameters for capture
Sun Jun 19 14:41:43 2016: ERROR: ALSA: cannot configure capture channel
So I'm assuming something's wrong with the connection of ALSA and Scarlett 2i2. After quite a lot of searching, and seeing as I'm very new to the linux environment, I really don't know how to fix this so I thought I'd ask you guys. Thanks in advance!

Edit: Also the interface option in QjackCtl's setup is now greyed out, I'm not sure what i did to cause this.

I've used a 2i2 in the past and it always just worked when starting from ardour. Same with the solo I have now. I'm sure there's a simple solution. However I have no useful input other than I know that scarlett stuff typically just works. But I don't use qjackctl to start them. Even patch bay is in ardour.

Are you sure that there is no pulseaudio installed on your system?

There is, I just kill it when I run Jack. Also I think the error message was different when I was trying to run Jack with pulseaudio still running.

Did you add your user to the 'audio' group? Maybe you have no permissions to access the device.

I'm starting to consider reinstalling ubuntu and starting over, I may have messed something up

EDIT: My bad, the above was with pulseaudio running. I killed and the only difference was the addition of this line in the output of aplay -l:

card 2: USB [Scarlett 2i2 USB], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]

Does alsamixer see your card? Your card may be acquired by one of running processes so JACK can not access it.

Yes it does, of course it says "This sound device does not have any controls." but i don't think this is a problem

In qjackctl's setup, leave the input and output devices as (default), choose duplex for audio and select the Scarlett in the interface field (it won't be greyed out by now). The first time at least, use the pop-up menu that appears when you click on the little horizontal arrow on the right, rather than the drop-down menu.
By following the instructions above, the Scarlett will be used both for capture and playback. Is this what you want?

Ok, I reinstalled everything. The horizontal arrow doesn't seem to be there, so I selected the Scarlett from the drop-down menu and these are the errors I got when I tried to start JACK:
Mon Jun 20 05:28:18 2016: ERROR: ALSA: no playback configurations available (Invalid argument)
Mon Jun 20 05:28:18 2016: ERROR: ALSA: cannot configure capture channel

Weird. You card is recognized by the system, seems to me. All regular also for your kernel modules. By the way, you shouldn't need to kill pulsaudio just to start jack... Try to make a simple setup with qjackctl. It will be saved in .jackdrc. You can view the file with

Code: Select all

cat .jackdrc
And run the string as a command. Have a try run it from there, also with sudo: I smell some weird privilege issue.

Now that I think about it... I have seen issues with Nvidea audio controllers in the past (You have and HDMI one under snd_hda_intel jurisdiction). You could try to disable all audio devices that are not the Scarlett, maybe in the bios or by blacklisting their kernel modules:

Code: Select all

blacklist snd_hda_intel
Refer to the page I linked to understand what the line above does and needs to be placed.

I see you are using the Nvidea proprietary drivers. It could be worth to make a test by disabling them. It is sometimes dodgy to use them with lowlatency or realtime kernels.
