Hi there,

My on board sound has stopped functioning at all for reasons I don't understand.

My external Babyface sound interface works fine when started via Cadence, but the intel sound doesn't work at all, whether started through Cadence, or qjackctl, or without jack at all.

Sound doesn't work with Bitwig or with VLC.

I have attached a screenshot of my setup in Cadence - can anyone help?

Bitwig has a "sound engine" button at the top left corner that turns orange when the sound engine is on, and it turns off by itself once in a while for reasons I cannot comprehend. It has left me wondering what was wrong with my system a few times.

There is only one case that I really understand. You can have multiple projects open simultaneously in tabs, but you can only have sound in one tab/project at a time. Whenever you open a project in a new tab, it "steals" the sound engine from the one that was using it. So you may switch to a tab where the sound engine had been running until just moments ago and be confused because it has no sound anymore. Even after learning that, I forgot and got confused a few times.

About VLC, I have no idea.

Luc, with regards to Bitwig, the engine is activated, and I have no problem using Bitwig when I use my external interface RME Babyface. The issue is that audio works for no application at all with the on board sound.

FalkTX, I poked around the mixer application from MATE and even installed kmix as well and can see nothing that is muted. But your suggestion inspired me to create a new user profile in MATE and low and behold sound works, though not through the headphone out - do you have any ideas why that might be?

With this new profile, using kmix, headphones are working.

Unfortunately I don't understand what the problem was, but this solution works (for now!) thanks for your help everyone.
