Controling Application Window Placement (KXStudio & NSM)

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Controling Application Window Placement (KXStudio & NSM)

Post by Fedora »

Greetings,

Now that Non Session Mgr. has simplified the set up of my work space, I'm trying to perfect it by controlling the placement of the application windows when they start the first time. I've tried using the KDE "Special Window Settings" and "Special Application Settings" but nothing seems to consistently place the application windows where I want them. Is this something that NSM can control? Or is this something that KDE can/should do, but I'm just doing it wrong?

Just in case it's helpful, this is what I'm doing....
I use VLC to play a video or audio file, add vocal (with reverb via Carla & Calf Reverb), mix the levels in Non Mixer, then stream the result (via Darksnow & Darkice) to a Shoutcast server which is then heard within Second Life. Qjackctl, Catia, JACKpatch and Konqueror (file mgmt.) are also involved. I'm using 2 monitors and 2 desktops. VLC stays full screen on 1 monitor (both desktops), and I'm trying to send specific applications to Desktop 1 or 2 based on how often I need to access them.

Thanks for any pointers, I'm sure I'll have more questions soon. heh heh

In special window settings I had to use the "force" settng, to get the placement and geometry to work. In the work around tab, there is a setting called "ignore requested geometry" that proved helpful with some applications. I should add I use these settings with ZynAddSubEX and other plugins that I use in Ardour on Kxstudio 14.04.

Aaaahhh.... that seems to be the magic I was missing! Thanks!! :D

Using "Force" also allowed me to make the Non Mixer window narrower. It defaults to a width suitable for 8 strips, but I only need 2 at the moment. For some reason the window wouldn't allow me to manually resize it smaller than the default width.

Now I just need to figure out if it's possible to get one or two applications to load a specific config file upon startup. E.g., Non Session Mgr. and Darksnow.

Thanks again!

In Kxstudio you can use the auto start ladish or jack setting in Cadence to load the app and its connections, but I do not know about loading specific config files in other other applications.

Aaahhh... it seems that this is the purpose of "nsm-proxy." I'll be looking into that now.
